" Rick Carlisle was back on the sideline Monday night, feeling refreshed after an unexpected three-day weekend.

He also was humbled by the number of friends who touched base with him after his fainting spell last Friday.

"Larry Bird texted me and said my beer-sugar must be down," Carlisle cracked.

The best news is what Carlisle saw from his team against the Cleveland Cavaliers. After averaging 21 turnovers in the first three exhibitions, the Mavericks had just 15 and held onto the ball long enough to get shots.

They'll worry about making them later.

Foul shooting led to an ugly night, and the Mavericks lost, 85-79, with deep reserves playing virtually all of the fourth quarter. Their preseason record dipped to 1-3.

There was good news, however, as center Brendan Haywood had his best game so far, staying active inside and finishing with five points, eight rebounds, two blocks and a steal in 16 minutes.

It was the second game in a row that Tyson Chandler started, and while the Mavericks continue to insist that Haywood is the starter, Chandler had been outplaying Haywood until Monday.

Also playing well was rookie Dominique Jones, who started at shooting guard. Although he missed six of eight shots, Jones had four nice assists and consistently got into the middle of the Cleveland defense.

The Mavericks had a chance to win it in the final minute, but Dee Brown's turnover led to a dunk by Leon Powe for an 84-79 lead. "
