"Can an outside shooter be too wide-open?

Vince Carter sometimes felt that way during his first Orlando Magic season.

Playing with a dominant center for the first time in his career, and with a roster loaded with capable 3-point shooters, Carter often received wide-open looks last year in the Magic's four-out, one-in offensive scheme.

Carter struggled to take advantage of the opportunities. He made only 42.8 percent of his shot attempts, the second-lowest field-goal percentage of his 12-year NBA career. He connected on just 36.7 percent of his 3-point tries.

So, he adjusted his routine this past offseason. Carter concentrated on making wide-open shots during his summertime workouts, and so far this preseason, the repetition has paid dividends. He has made 59.1 percent of his field-goal attempts and 63.6 percent of his 3-point attempts this preseason.

"You don't get all the open shots like that, say, at New Jersey and Toronto," Carter said. "It's a different atmosphere for me. That was one of the things that I wanted to really work on: just being able to knock those open shots down. I'm so used to hitting shots with a hand in my face and sometimes a double-team."

Coach Stan Van Gundy labeled Carter's latest effort — 25 points in 19-plus minutes Friday night against the Indiana Pacers — "unbelievable."

"He's hitting everything," Van Gundy said.

    Double the design

Some Indiana Pacers officials raised their eyebrows when they heard Magic President Alex Martins recently say that Amway Center is the NBA's best building.

But Martins has nothing but praise for the Pacers' critically acclaimed arena, Conseco Fieldhouse.

In fact, Martins and Magic officials visited the gorgeous brick building in Indianapolis no less than four times before architects completed their plans for Amway Center. As a result, the two buildings share two major commonalities."

It's about time. He can't fly the way he used to, so he has to round out his game more.

People have been asking of this from him for a long time, because he misses way to many easy jumpers now.
