Sometimes it's about knowing soon enough when to abort.

By almost any measure last season, the Charlotte Bobcats were among the NBA's best defensively and worst offensively. Coach Larry Brown is looking to change that, in part by asking the players to recognize sooner when a play has broken down.

Improvise, he tells them, before it's too late for Plan B. For center Nazr Mohammed, that might mean setting a screen for the ballhandler. For forward Gerald Wallace, that means driving the baseline. For guard Stephen Jackson, maybe passing out of a double-team.

Something needs to change because far too many possessions last season ended in a shot-clock violation or some other kind of turnover. They ended the season with the NBA's second-most turnovers (15.7 per game) and the third-fewest points (95.3 per game).

"It's real hard to guard pick-and-rolls, particularly when the court is spread out," Brown said. "So I'm trying to get our guys, when a play breaks down, to get right into something" else.
