Some numbers: First #1 Pac-10 team since USC, 21 Sep 2008 First #1 Non-USC Pac-10 team since Washington, 3 Nov 1992 The Pac-10 has held the AP #1 spot 106 times: 83 - USC 12 - Washington 7 - UCLA (last 25 Oct 1988) 3 - California (last 15 Oct 1951) 1 - Oregon (current)
I'd like to see the Ducks make it to Dec. 4th undefeated, but I don't think they will. USC will probably get them.
They won't be the #1 in the BCS and that's all that matters. Still work to do. Get past USC though and I really like the Ducks' chances to run the table. Oregon State doesn't scare me at all.
I hate saying this, but I've had this terrible feeling about the Bruins game (suspensions? not sure). I hope I'm wrong, though.
Actually, you've got it somewhat backwards. I understand what you're trying to say, but read that back and think again about what you just said. The BCS isn't really what matters right now because the BCS isn't even used until the regular season is over, so as of right now in October, it is 100% meaningless. Oregon could be ranked 5th in the BCS right now, but it wouldn't mean anything because Oregon has the toughest strength-of-schedule of the teams that will (or could) still go undefeated over the reamining weeks (which is what the computers use). And they are #1 in the polls and can't move down even with 1 point victories for the remaining games. So this all means that no matter what the BCS says tomorrow, Oregon would mathematically HAVE to be #1 due to the nature of the way the BCS works, so long as Oregon gets a win by at least one point over their final six games. I doubt that will happen, but the point is the last thing Duck fans need to be worried about is their BCS ranking six weeks before they mean anything since the computer rankings that account for 33% of those pts will destroy BSU and TCU here over the next six weeks and drop them completely out the top 5. That said, either Oregon or Oklahoma is projected to be #1 by every onine site I see, so they're definitely up there on top somewhere. But anyway you're second part is the big statement. Get past USC and OSU first and take care of business, the BCS has no choice but to follow.
I don't care about any rankings right now, but in the end the BCS is all that matters. USA Today and Harris Interactive factors into it, but the BCS is all that matters when it's all said and done. If they're not #1 in the BCS it doesn't matter.
I believe you will be. Oregon should be able to run it down their throat. Some other leading rushers have and I see James having a big day on National TV to help his Heisman case.
To expand on the poll rankings, Oregon was ranked #2 in the AP and USA Today Polls at the end of the regular season in 2001, but 5th in the BCS, thus resulting in Nebraska playing for the NC against Miami, and that was when both of those polls still factored in(AP no longer does). Like I said, still a lot of work to do and things to go down. Far from a sure thing.
WE'RE #1!!!!!! No matter how long it lasts, it's an honor for my beloved Ducks. That said, we have a lot of work ahead of us.
