Bulls without Noah, Korver for Raptors game

TORONTO --- The revolving door that is the Bulls' starting lineup continued to spin Wednesday with Joakim Noah sitting for the Raptors' game with flu-like symptoms and Kyle Korver out with a cyst in his left ankle.

Korver hasn't started but has been a key reserve. Noah has started the previous six games.

The Bulls' preseason has been littered with injuries.

Preseason Open Game Thread #7: Bulls at Toronto Raptors

(note: I don't expect much, but if you sign up for a game preview, at least do one. It's alright, just preseason: we'll work our way into shape.)

Out for the Bulls tonight: Korver (ankle) and Noah (flu-like symptoms). If that doesn't get you apathetic about emough, how about this?

Expect extended minutes for Scal tonight, Omer to start, maybe a little Lu at the 4, more PT for Brewer, CJ and Derrick together.

Bulls trail Raptors 54-50 at halftime

TORONTO -- In an uneven performance, the Bulls trail the Raptors 54-50 at halftime Wednesday night at Air Canada Centre.

Luol Deng leads the Bulls with 14 points, while Derrick Rose tallied 12 points, five rebounds and five assists. Rose, however, shot just 4 for 12.

The Bulls committed eight turnovers and allowed 30 points in the paint, consistently getting beat downcourt in transition. Leandro Barbosa's 13 points leads the Raptors.

The Bulls played without Joakim Noah and Kyle Korver.

Only half paid attention to this one (in fact I'm not even caught up on the DVR), and...I got pretty much nothin'. Oh, one thing: Despite missing a few inside attempts, Rose looked like the best player on the court by miles.

Bulls' Rose calls Scalabrine 'a coach on the floor'

There's this shortsighted perception of Brian Scalabrine as some mascot, the non-athletic guy at the end of the bench who gets his name chanted at the end of blowouts.

That perception, say those who play with Scalabrine, is wrong.

"He's a coach on the floor," Derrick Rose said. "When we don't know what to run, Scal is helping me and the other point guards, telling me where to go. He makes my job a lot easier."

There have been sporadic questions lately from reporters asking if Scalabrine, who signed a non-guaranteed contract to come to Bulls camp, will make the final roster. Trust this: Scalabrine made the team the day he signed the deal.

Tom Thibodeau has a comfort level with Scalabrine from their three seasons together in Boston. Thibodeau values practice, and Scalabrine is known universally around the league as a great practice player. And Thibodeau also knows Scalabrine can go a week without playing and still step in and contribute.

Thibodeau didn't need Scalabrine's 6-for-7 shooting against the Raptors on Wednesday night to know that.

"He's a solid veteran," Thibodeau said. "He gives you veteran leadership. He's been in a lot of situations. We were short-handed, and that's why I like him. He stays ready to play. You put him out there and he can guard people. His team defense is very good.

"And offensively, he's smart. He keeps the ball moving. He knows where the matchups are. He knows who's hot. He knows how the play is being defended. You can count on him."

Just like you can count on Scalabrine making the team.

Kyle Weaver averaged 2.3 ppg, 2.3 apg, 1.7 rpg and 8.7 mpg in three preseason games.October 21, 2010—The Chicago Bulls announced today that the team has requested waivers on guards John Lucas III and Kyle Weaver, and forward Roger Powell.

Lucas III (5-11, 165) saw action in five preseason games with the Bulls and averaged 2.2 ppg and 0.8 apg in 6.4 mpg.

Ex-Bull Kerr: Heat won't top 72-win record

Count former Bulls guard and current TNT broadcaster Steve Kerr among those who believe the 1995-96 Bulls' record of 72 victories won't be topped by the Miami Heat.

"I just don't think that's a record that's going to be touched," Kerr said in a conference call. "Those were very unique circumstances with Michael Jordan coming back after his playoff failure after his return from baseball. He was so motivated and it seems like he won about 10 games on his own that year because he decided he didn't want us to lose. He had such an incredible edge.
"I do think LeBron (James) will have an edge this year based on a lot of the criticism that he's received. I think they are going to win a ton of games; they are too talented not to. But there are so many variables and so many things that can go wrong. We're seeing one already before the season starts with (Heat guard) Mike Miller being out for at least a couple of weeks. Dwyane Wade has missed most of camp with the hamstring injury."

Kerr's former teammate, Scottie Pippen, said at his Hall of Fame induction in August that he didn't even think the Heat would win the Eastern Conference. Kerr disagreed with that.

"With that talent, I'd be shocked if (the Heat) didn't win 60-plus and have the best record in the East (Conference) going into the playoffs."

Bulls waive Powell, Lucas, Weaver

The Bulls requested waivers on Roger Powell, Kyle Weaver and John Lucas III on Thursday.

The Bulls' roster now stands at 13 players. It's possible another minor signing could happen between now and Monday's deadline to turn in rosters to the league office.

Bulls make cuts to 13, plus stuff on James Johnson, watchability, and more LINKS

Biggest news today was the Bulls trimming the roster, requesting waivers on John Lucas, Roger Powell (forgot he hadn't been cut yet), and Kyle Weaver. That puts the roster at 13, and means another signing is almost likely.

Interesting that the Bulls are now without an emergency PG, and some would say they don't even have a backup. Lots of decent-enough players remain unsigned, Eric Dampier has yet to make a choice, and there's always time to burn the Rudy Fernandez oil again, right?

Another roster decision is coming up at the end of the month, and that's whether to pick up the 2011-12 option on James Johnson. The Suns made news today by saying they will not be doing the same for their '09 draftee Earl Clark, who joins a pretty exclusive group. Jimmy Johns has looked decent at times this preseason, and while I still doubt he'll ever hone his game enough to be a counted-upon role player, his option for that season is only ~$1.83m, and at the very least could be a pseudo-expiring contract for that year.

Derrick Rose has new weapon: a personal chef

Derrick Rose was looking forward to this Friday for two reasons.

Foremost, the Bulls play their final exhibition game and he is eager to get started with the regular season. Secondly, Rose was anticipating the first day of services for his personal chef.

The idea, Rose says, is to lead a disciplined lifestyle so that he can stay healthy throughout the arduous NBA season.

"I just got a chef, so eating right, getting rest, not going too many places. ... If I'm in the house, just laying around the house after practice, not going out .... things like that," Rose told us Thursday following the annual Bulls Luncheon at the Hilton.

You might recall over the summer when Rose, who has a major sweet tooth, was given a personalized Skittles vending machine from the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company.

I can't wait for the season to kick off next week! With LBJ out of the division, I see the Bulls as the favorite to win the division and secure a top 4 playoff seed in the East. Our first 2 weeks have some winnable games, but how do you see us faring in the 9 game circus stretch with 8 road games and facing only Orlando at home? This trip seems to be the Achilles heel for this team that can be the difference between a 7-8 seed or a 4-5 seed.

Bulls lead Pacers at half

Firing on all cylinders offensively, the Bulls led the Pacers 59-38 at halftime Friday night in their exhibition finale at United Center.

The Bulls played without Joakim Noah for the second straight game.

Luol Deng sank all 10 first-quarter free throws and led the Bulls with 17 points. Derrick Rose added 11 in just 13 minutes as the Bulls shot 48.7 percent.

The Pacers, without Danny Granger, shot just 37.5 percent.

Kyle Korver returned to the lineup after missing one game with a cyst in his left ankle.

Thibodeau said that Asik got more playing time than he otherwise would have received. I think it's hard to complain about having him as a backup center or even an occasional pair with Noah.
