The plan might be just to sign Oberto until Joel gets back to full speed and then cut him and re-sign Jeff? But we promise Oberto a full year's contract whatever happens?

Modicum of humanity, please. What is the remaining value of his contract? Somehow I do believe he is going to be well compensated - in fact, he's making the same amount of money regardless. Not too shabby for a guy one year out of college in this economy.

So have I. :dunno: And none of mine were dunks.

Oberto seems to be a solid addition, even if he is mostly washed up. The question is, does this make it more or less likely we still make a play for Sideshow Bob? I think it should still be on the table (if it ever was).

I'm not excited by the signing... I think he's done.

But he's a big body that will be more helpful than, say, an injured Pendergraph.

Kind of the same reaction many got around here when we signed Juwan, he turned out to be at least serviceable.

We'll see with Oberto. I'm hoping he'll not have to get off the bench.

It is just a business. Roy and Aldridge weren't looking to give the team any breaks in contract negotiations to promote a family atmosphere. I'm pretty sure the players understand it's just a business and look at it that way when it comes to their own well-being.

Well compensated is fine. There is still something to be said about being around to help a guy that got injured playing for you. The Blazers and PA have the resources to do it. They do not have to do it - it would just be the nice thing to do.

FWIW, I agree with you. It would be a good thing to do. I just have no problem with the Blazers waiving Pendergraph for the roster spot. But letting him rehab in their facilities, on their dime...good thing, if it's kosher with the league.

I wonder about that. I don't think there's any rules against it. Seems like every off-season there's a couple guys that aren't under contract working out here. But I've never heard of guys hanging around during the season. Maybe the NBA has some stricter in season rules on that sort of thing.

I know Desmond Mason does every year. He married a smokin hot little blondie from Jesuit.

This signing makes sense for everyone. With Joel, Oden and Pendergraph injured, the Blazers need a rent-a-big to back-up Camby until one of Joel/Greg gets back. Oberto isn't great, at this point in his career, but he's cheap, knows the game and will accept his role - splitting the back-up center minutes with LaMarcus until one of Joel/Greg gets back. As soon as one of them gets back, he will move to the end of the bench. As soon as they are both back, he'll move behind the bench in street clothes. Yes, Dampier is better, but he wants a two year deal, more money (which means he also expects to actually play) and I doubt he'd be happy moving from starter last year to 4th string once our other centers are back in about a month.

The one year deal also makes sense. Pendy is out for the season, so Oberto takes his roster spot. Pendy still gets paid his full salary and the Blazers can always re-sign him next year. They didn't hold his Bird rights anyway. So, this doesn't impact their ability to re-sign him in any way.

And, I'm not sure why people are concerned about his rehab. I'm sure, no matter where he does it and who he works with, it's all covered by insurance. So, he gets paid his full salary, can focus on his rehab and can chose who he wants to work with and where it will take place. He'll be fine. The club didn't do him any disservice. He is being taken care of.

I get why we did it, but I think it was a bad move. Oberto sucks. He's undersized and he's washed up. Pendy will be a valuable reserve in the future.

Undersized in what sense of the word? he's legitimately 6'10." It might not be a great move because his ability to play has fallen off a cliff the last couple of years. Secondly, I seriously doubt your claim that Pendy was suddenly going to morph into a valuable reserve because of his play -- the guy is a 6'8" power forward with the game of a center.

Jeff Pendergraph hurt his knee two weeks ago, that's who he's really replacing. I think you're making the mistake thinking that this guy is somehow going to replace Greg or Joel, when all they really want is a warm body in practice and occasional spot minutes at the 4 or the 5 depending on foul trouble and health.
