Apparently that was a huge factor in why Phoenix did not re-sign Amare:

The MF procedure is mainly meant to buy guys some time. Just look at Kenyon Martin, of course that guy is now well past thirty, but his knees are going fast after two MF surgeries. Amare' will be something like 33 or so when his contract expires with New York, so there's probably a decent chance that his body doesn't hold up in the last couple of years of his deal.

As for Greg? he doesn't really have all that much wear and tear two years removed from his surgery, so who knows, maybe he'll be good for the next 7 or 8 years or so -- especially if he averages something like fifty games a year.

...and if we keep the cupboard stocked with other really good centers.

I think we may have to plan on him being another Arvydas Sabonis. Oft-injured, limited in minutes, but when he's out there boy does he make a difference.

Not ideal. We all wanted Arvydas in 1986, not 1996. But we were happy to get any version of him.

At the time Greg suffered his "slight tear" it was reported that whether the injury happened in a weight bearing area, the age of the player, and how quickly the injury was repaired were all factors working for him... and if the various expert medical guesses just voiced are to be believed, Greg's knee shelf life should carry at least through his next contract. Sorry Fez :(

Zach had his MF in 2005, Jason Kidd in 2004...

Luckily for us Greg rarely plays, so we should be able to use him for at least 10 more years

He needs to actually get on the floor before I'll start worrying about MF shelf life...

I didn't know this. How depressing. This recent injury can't have helped either. What a disappointment. Meanwhile, Duarnt is favorite for MVP.

it's a broad statement from Kerr and I for one hope that it doesn't apply to Amare. everyone heals differently and to different levels.

No offense to Dr. Kerr. His extensive research on the biology of MF surgery may someday win him a Nobel Prize, but for now I won't indulge on his theory.
