There will be a couple more WEC cards, then the 135-155lbs. weight classes of the WEC will be merged into the UFC.
One thing that could happen now is guys who are fighting above their weight class in the UFC (lightweights) could drop down to 145 and keep their spot. Dunno who those guys might be but I'm sure we'll see a handful of them. Especially since the lightweight division just grew by like 40% at least.
I'm a fan of this move, should mean more cards, and the WEC guys always put on great shows so to add that energy and excitement to the UFC cards should really bring up the product. EDIT: should also mean alittle more cash in the little guys pocket
Sweet. Seems like lately with the increase in UFC cards a lot of them have been lacking in quality main events/co-main events. Adding more weight classes should help a lot with putting more relevant, meaningful fights on these cards. Interesting when Helwani asked Dana about adding weight classes and Dana seemed very adamant that adding weight classes is inevitable. 125 lbs is the one you hear the most about but it seemed like Dana has more than that in mind so now I'm wondering if the prospect of splitting up the heavyweight division could actually happen. I think a 235-240 lb weight class could be a lot of fun with all the talented heavyweights in that range as well as bigger LHWs who could move up to that weight. For the time being the HW division has good talent and is pretty competitive but if there was eventually a surplus of talent, especially guys who could fill out a 240-265 lb weight class, I wouldn't mind splitting up that division.
Splitting up the HWs is probably something that will happen eventually but right now I'm not sure there are enough guys over 240 to justify it. Plus we just saw that size isn't the biggest factor at UFC 121.
The first event of the post-merger era will be UFC 125. Featherweight World Champion Jose Aldo is expected to face Mark Hominick or Josh Grispi at the event.
The winner of Ben Henderson vs. Anthony Pettis will face the winner of Frank Edgar vs. Gray Maynard to unify the UFC Lightweight World Championship.
This is a fight I expected as soon as I read the news, it makes a ton of sense to bolster a weakish New Years card with an exciting fighter like Aldo as well as introduce the UFC fans who don't follow the WEC with the best of the best the WEC has to offer.
I am not sure how I feel about this, I can comprehend that it is good news but I still have a weird feeling in my gut. We're now missing out on a lot of free WEC, that's one negative I can think of, maybe they'll throw'em on Spike?
