Thibodeau hints at Asik sitting vs. Pistons

Rookie center Omer Asik played only 2 minutes, 31 seconds in Wednesday's season opener against the Thunder.

That number might drop in Saturday's home opener against the Pistons.

"A lot depends on matchups," coach Tom Thibodeau said pregame. "We have a pretty good idea about the rotation and if there's size up front and we need rebounding, I won't hesitate to play him. I thought he played very well in the preseason.

"But a lot of teams are going small. So we're going the other way right now. If it's a big post-up team, he'll play more. If it's a small, shooting team, he'll play less."

The Pistons often play three wing players, even with Will Bynum sitting Saturday night with a hamstring injury.

"They're such a good scoring team and they're playing small,"Thibodeau said. "So you have to control dribble penetration. (Rodney)Stuckey is very tough. And (Ben) Gordon had a big night (Friday) night.They put a lot of pressure on your defense."

Bulls Game Day: Pistons up big at half

Ben Gordon scored 21 points without a miss from the field or free-throw line and the Pistons built a huge 63-44 halftime lead over the Bulls in Saturday's home opener.

The Pistons enjoyed a 23-5 edge in free throw attempts, continuing a disturbing statistic from Wednesday's opener in Oklahoma City.

Rodney Stuckey added 13 points for the Pistons, who shot 52.8 percent.

Derrick Rose's 17 points led the Bulls, who shot 39.6 percent.

Coach Tom Thibodeau pulled out all the stops in the second quarter, inserting James Johnson and Omer Asik in an attempt to find the right combinations and any energy. Johnson had a steal and nifty behind-the-back pass to Keith Bogans for a fast-break layup.

Kyle Korver played just three minutes.

Johnson's 'terrific attitude' delivers for Bulls

Apparently, Tom Thibodeau is big on communication.

According to two Bulls, Thibodeau flat out told James Johnson he wouldn't be in the rotation following his decent preseason.

But with the Bulls struggling and falling behind by as many as 20 in the first half of Saturday's comeback victory over the Pistons, Thibodeau pulled out all the stops, searching for energy from anywhere.

Enter Johnson.

Even more surprising? Johnson delivered, tallying eight points, nine rebounds, four assists and three blocks while playing the entire fourth quarter.

"His attitude is terrific," Thibodeau said. "His spirt has been great. The Oklahoma City game, he's on the bench, he's into every play, he's supporting his teammates, he's practicing hard. He's doing all the things he's supposed to be doing."

Johnson's 3-pointer from the corner with 5 minutes, 2 seconds left off a feed from Derrick Rose tied the game.

"He played great," Rose said. "He was rebounding the ball, playing defense and under control. He helped us a lot."

It will be interesting to see how much Johnson plays Monday against the Trail Blazers. After all, he wasn't supposed to be in the rotation.

Former Trail Blazers star Maurice Lucas dies at 58

The Oregonian reports: Trail Blazers legend Maurice Lucas, the starting power forward known as "The Enforcer" on the team's only NBA Championship, has passed away at the age of 58.

Lucas had battled bladder cancer for the past two years. He was an assistant coach for the Blazers when he had surgery in April of 2009, then appeared to be recovering when he suffered a relapse that hospitalized him in November of 2009.

He played two years at Marquette, going to the NCAA championship game in 1974. The Bulls drafted Lucas in 1974 with the 14th pick, but he joined the ABA instead.

Former Trail Blazers star Maurice Lucas dies at 58

PORTLAND, Oregon -- Maurice Lucas, the fierce power forward who helped lead the Portland Trail Blazers to the 1977 NBA title, has died after a long fight with bladder cancer. He was 58.

The Trail Blazers said Lucas died Sunday.

Lucas, whose No. 20 was retired by the Blazers in 1988, joined Portland in the 1976 and led the 1976-77 championship team in scoring with a 20.2 average. He also averaged 11.2 rebounds that season.

He averaged 14.4 points and 8.8 rebounds in 12 NBA seasons with Portland, New Jersey, New York, Phoenix, the Los Angeles Lakers and Seattle. He also served as an assistant coach with the Blazers.

The Bulls drafted Lucas in 1974 with the 14th pick, but he joined the ABA instead.

Lucas is survived by wife Pamela, sons David and Maurice II and daughter Kristin.

Bulls' Thibodeau leasing home in Highland Park

New Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau has leased a three-bedroom row home just west of downtown Highland Park for $4,900 a month.

In June, Thibodeau, 52, inked a three-year, $6.5 million deal with the Bulls. On July 23, Thibodeau signed another contract to rent the eight-room home, which was built in 2007. It has three full baths, two half baths, one fireplace, a gourmet kitchen, a study, an elevator and a finished lower level.

Bulls expect big challenge from unbeaten Blazers

The Trail Blazers are 3-0 for the first time in 11 years and have rallied in the fourth quarter of all three victories.

That speaks to Portland's depth.

"They have everything," Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said.

A pattern is forming with Thibodeau, which isn't uncommon among head coaches. He talks up every team like it's championship caliber.

"They have good size up front," Thibodeau continued. "(Marcus) Camby is a great defensive player. (Brandon) Roy is a do-everything type of guard. He is very good off the dribble, catch-and-shoot, posting and also a big-time player at the end of games.

"And Andre Miller is very problematic at the point. He is very clever. (Nicolas) Batum is shooting the ball. (LaMarcus) Aldridge spreads the floor with his shooting ability. And (Rudy) Fernandez is a sparkplug off the bench."

The Bulls spent all summer trying to acquire the disgruntled Fernandez in trade talks. Portland consistently asked for the first-round draft pick the Bulls acquired from Charlotte in the Tyrus Thomas trade, which could be unprotected by 2016.

It will be intriguing to monitor how many minutes James Johnson receives in Monday's game after playing the entire fourth quarter in Saturday's victory over the Pistons.

Game Preview #3: Pritchslappys at Bulls

Ah, Portland. The anointed "Team on the rise with young, humble talent that makes you warm inside" for the past several years have gone relatively unnoticed since every blogger and sportswriter in existence has decided that Kevin Durant is in fact a holy union of Jesus and Krishna. But as one of the remaining undefeated teams they present another formidable challenge for our offensively challenged Bulls. Will Chicago flash that gumption we saw against Detroit or will we be treated to another November massacre at the hands of Portland?

As it's been for several years now, the Blazers rise and fall with Brandon Roy. He's not exactly the most entertaining player out there but is an excellent all around talent. Not quite the level of elite scorer like Wade or Paul but certainly proven that he can carry the load, rebound and even run the point when needed. I don't think the SG dumpster really stands much of a chance to stop him and if he gets going Thibs should turn to Scottie Pippen aka James Johnson. I've always liked his effort defensively and if he can hit a few shots it's an added bonus. The rest of the Blazers cast hasn't changed much. They signed Wesley Matthews to a questionable contract (length, not the dollars) and I honestly haven't watched him play that much. But he looks versatile enough to play alongside Roy so that's what matters. Andre Miller is consistently underrated. He should likely get destroyed by D. Rose but is one of the remaining guards in the league that actually looks to pass first. If the Bulls aren't patient with their rotations he will pick them apart. Nic Batum is quickly becoming a very dangerous player. He is an excellent outside shooter and their best perimeter defender. Think Thabo Sefolosha if he was good at more than one thing. Look for Luol Deng to do absolutely nothing of consequence or score 35 points against him. Their frontcourt is solid yet unspectacular. Without Oden and Vanilla Gorilla they now turn to Marcus Camby to play well for 25 games before rupturing a testicle. LaMarcus Aldridge is boring and Tyrus will always be better. Rudy Fernandez needs to get his sexy self on our side of the court.

As for our intrepid warriors, this is an interesting test. The Bulls showed some of that Thibs-classic pressure D against Detroit but the Pistons are a worthless team so getting them to fold isn't a huge accomplishment. Can the Bulls be patient against one of the better offenses? If Taj can keep Aldridge from going off (which he hasn't done before) and Jo can get Camby in foul trouble this turns into a very winnable game. The Blazers hate to run so Rose needs to continue to assert himself for the entire game. James Johnson has proven he deserves a spot in the rotation with Brewer banged up. Give Rose a running partner, even if he'll foul out guarding Roy.

Prediction: Chicago plays better offensively but won't stop Portland's backcourt. Rose takes another 30 shots and there will be 666 comments about it. Noah will play so well he will make the females in attendance ovulate.

Visit Blazersedge to remember just how amazing we are. Those mongrels think being nice to one another and avoiding cussing is an admirable trait.

Chicago's dilemma: Rudy, Carmelo, or neither?

Rudy Fernandez and his Portland Trail Blazers visit the Bulls this Monday. Carmelo Anthony and the Nuggets are at the UC next Monday. Sam Smith says that the odds of acquiring either are slim. But if you had a chance, do you go for the easier-to-get Fernandez? Or hold back on the chance you might score big with Anthony? Or just wait it out...

"Denver hasn’t traded Anthony yet," writes Sam Smith. "Everyone assumes they eventually will. What if they cannot get Anthony to agree to go to New Jersey or Houston or Orlando or the many teams that will bid for him? What if Anthony says New York, believed to be his No. 1 choice, or Chicago, No. 2, or he just forgoes the extension and plays it out and leaves?"

It’s not going to be the all year drama of 2009-10 with the LeBron James recruiting tour this season. Though we will have the Carmelo-drama, as the pursuit of Carmelo Anthony is now being called, and for the Bulls, starting Monday, it’s the latest NBA fashion show.

That’s because Monday the Bulls host the 3-0 Portland Trail Blazers and Rudy Fernandez, the disgruntled Spaniard who’s made it pretty clear he wants out of Portland and back to Spain. We think.

Bulls Game Day: Lead Trail Blazers at half

Behind 60 percent shooting, the Bulls led the Trail Blazers 56-47 at halftime Monday night at United Center.

Luol Deng, who didn't play the fourth quarter of Saturday's victory over the Pistons, scored 16 first-quarter points and has 20 at the break. He sank 8 of 11 shots.

Tom Thibodeau used Omer Asik and James Johnson as his first two players off the bench and 11 of 12 players overall. All but Keith Bogans scored.

LaMarcus Aldridge led all scorers with 22 points. The Bulls caught a break when Brandon Roy missed six of seven shots for Portland, which entered 3-0.

Rose gets ball where it needs to go in Bulls' win

There were plenty of statistics that stood out after the Bulls' 110-98 victory over the Trail Blazers on Monday night.

The Bulls shot 60.6 percent, their highest mark since tallying 67 percent against the Bucks on April 14, 2008.

It's also not often a team shoots a higher percentage from the field than the free-throw line, although the Bulls' 59.4 percent clankfest from the latter qualified against Portland.

But the statistics players focused on the most were Derrick Rose's career-high-tying 13 assists and all 11 players who received time scoring. That's the kind of depth the Bulls had talked about all preseason but hadn't appeared in the first two regular-season games.

But with the Blazers trapping Rose at virtually every opportunity, Rose found the open man and the Bulls knocked down open shots. Luol Deng, with a career-high 40 points, made the most.

"I think it's important to make the right play," coach Tom Thibodeau said. "Derrick has the responsibility of running the team. Some nights, a guy can get hot. He has to read that."

If Rose continues to do so, the Bulls will be difficult to beat. And the offensive balance should improve when Carlos Boozer returns from injury in late November or early December.

Thibodeau is showing confidence in his bench. He used 11 players in the first half alone against Portland.

"The last week, we've really made strides," guard Kyle Korver said. "And we can be a lot better."

Former Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro's honeymoon with the Los Angeles Clippers may already be over.

After the Clippers were blown out again Monday to fall to 0-4, Del Negro was teed up by Los Angeles Times columnist T.J. Simers, who wrote that the perennially downtrodden Clippers "have finally found their man, so clueless it's as if he was born to be this organization's spokesman."

According to Simers, the Clippers coach "likes to speak in contradictions, so he's almost always right as well as wrong, and as joke's go, Vinny Del Negro is a hoot. He's the latest tough guy to think he can turn around this clown operation, yet only a few games into his first season he's at a loss to explain why the Clippers are playing like the Clippers."Star guard Eric Gordon, a standout this summer on the U.S. national team, said Monday that the Clippers played hard in the season opener, "but that was the only game where we played hard.''

Asked about Gordon's comments, Del Negro said, "I think it's pretty accurate. The mentality of not playing hard every game is ridiculous.''

But as Simers notes, a few minutes later, Del Negro told the same reporters, "I don't think anyone has the right to say we're not playing hard.''

Summarizes Simers: "As he continues to talk, he sounds so far in over his head it's no wonder he's already drowning. The Del Negro error has begun, all right."

Safety concerns force Knicks' postponement

The Blackhawks aren't the only ones who created a mess at Madison Square Garden on Monday.

The Knicks released a statement Tuesday announcing the postponement of their game against the Orlando Magic that was scheduled for Tuesday night because debris fell into the arena during "overnight maintenance of Madison Square Garden, which included cleaning asbestos-related materials in the attic above the ceiling."

The team said the postponement was made "out of an abundance of caution" and that the venerable building won't be re-opened until "we are absolutely assured the Arena is safe."

The Bulls don't visit Madison Square Garden until Christmas Day. The Blackhawks, who lost 3-2 to the Rangers, aren't scheduled to return this season.
