Back in 1990 I bought a second hand TV; I think I paid around $35. It saw me through the 1990 NBA Finals, moved with me to California, saw me through the 1990 World Series disappointment, the 1992 NBA Finals, the 91, 99 & 2000 WC Finals, the 49ers 1995 Super Bowl, and five presidential elections before finally giving up the ghost at the start of Game 6 of this year's National League Championship Series. I got my $35 worth! I knew it was dying (the top third of the screen was black; it's rather disconcerting watching Law & Order SVU when all the characters look like they've been decapitated. I had a new TV on order & it arrived last week, Sony Bravia LCD. It looks a hell of a lot better but I'm having trouble fine-tuning the color. There are various options (general, sports, cinema, photograph, etc). At first it was too yellow. I watched Julia Child and the meat looked green, something that would turn anyone vegetarian. I adjusted and watched Blazers/Knicks. All the players looked like they were wearing lipstick! Any suggestions so it's not too red or too yellow? Also, when setting it up I was able to keep fingers off the screen but in the process of connecting satellite receiver, DVR & TV the border of the TV got fingermarks. The screen and border are apparently plastic, not glass, and I don't know what to clean them with. I tried wiping the edges with just a dustcloth, the fingermarks smeared but did not go away. Nearly every commercial cleaner has scent added and I can't tolerate scent. For cleaning glass I use 10% rubbing alcohol solution but don't think I can put alcohol on new TV screen. Ideas? Thanks. And welcome me to 21st century TV-land.
Make sure the connections are good. If you have a digital source (and all TV sources are digital now!), the TV should correct the colors by itself. It's part of the signal. If your cabling between cable box (satellite box) and the TV isn't plugged in all the way, you will see colors messed up. I haven't touched the red/green/blue/color settings on any of the 3 HD TVs I've had in the past 6 years.
I'll double check connections but I think they're pretty tight. It goes satellite to receiver to DVR to TV.
If there's a video setting to reset to factory defaults, do that and don't mess with anything. If the TV is working properly, and the color is tinted green, it's the program that's bad, or maybe you have something green hanging on the wall reflecting on the screen
If you can't get it calibrated, here is the best way to adjust it by eye. Record some NBC and pause your DVR when they show a peacock with the colors they have. You will know when they look right to your eye.
