Well that sucks and I hope the best for Oberto. Well, at least if we are going to have a rash of injuries again this season, perhaps they will all strike the bottom of the bench instead of the best players like last season. I would rather have a end of bench rook and fill-in elderly center than Roy, Oden, Joel, Batum ....
I am glad he made that choice, lost a grandfather to the same issue, and my own father had pulmonary ablation (same procedure Oberto had a few years back) also to correct advanced atrial fibrillation. Partly because he is in his 60's, but also due to the nature of the procedure, he is physically a totally changed man (for the worse) after the procedure... very hard on the system and I was having a hard time understanding how Oberto did the same thing. Me... I am lucky and only have "mild" cardiac dysrhythmia, hopefully I won't ever have to go through that process. Sucks for us, but really, we don't need a player dying on the court, if it was a concern for his doctor and family, I am glad he did it.
I thought he was an adequate backup. He didn't make huge mistakes, he tended to knock people around, and he rebounded the ball. Can't ask for much more. It's really too bad that he had to retire. He was a decent stop-gap until Joel or Greg comes back.
Bummer. I thought Fabricio was doing a decent job for us. I agree he made the right decision though and I wish him the best. Why am I so worried about somebody going down with an injury tonight???
I think it was just today i heard on the game that Joel thinks he is ready to go 10-12 minutes a game but the staff wants him to take it slow. Maybe they should give him that 10 mins a game now.
What a totally class move by Fab. Why can't more NBA players be like this? No wonder this guy was so well liked everywhere he played. He's just a good guy. And while he made good money compared to the average Joe, it's not like he ever had a huge contract by NBA standards. There are 18 players in the league that will make more this season than Oberto made in his entire NBA career, and yet he gave back almost $900,000 that was his for the taking. Paul Allen paid Shawn Kemp over $27 million for two years after he was waived by the team. Kemp basically cost the Blazers $100 million in salary and luxury tax for less than two very mediocre seasons in Portland. We all know about Darius Miles and the $9 million per year in salary he continued to cost the Blazers four years after the last game he played for the team. And then there was Derek Anderson who, at one point was being paid by three different teams to NOT play basketball (including nearly $10 million from Portland). I wish Oberto the best. He obviously made the right decision and followed it up with an extremely ethical, classy move. BNM
