Anyhow, I think I've posted mostly guitar work. I'm not that into synthesizers unless there's a heavy classical or jazz component to their use. Or for effect. The Steve Winwood song has sax and synth and it's hard to distinguish the two; it's Stevie's way of using his keyboard playing ability to jam with the sax player on his turf.

I'm impressed by great musicianship more than I am about pop success. The Rick Wakeman solo I posted is synth, but he's a Juliard graduate and the music is classical. The rag time he ends with is classical music, too. And I'm impressed with how fast his notes are and without being repetitious. In my opinion, the truly great keyboardists show it when they play a plain old piano, like Emerson in the video I posted. The guy has two right hands or something.

The covers get you two for one. Tribute to the original music, and someone else's take on how to play it.

The Elton John song? It's meant to be played on a massive church organ - where the organ is built into the building, the building is mostly the organ.

Tull? Flute! Classical influence. Every guy in his band is a top notch musician.

The Nancy Wilson? Don't need no techno crap. Just give her an acoustic guitar and a microphone and she would put on one hell of a concert.

Speaking of guitars... I have a few and have been playing since the 70s. I notice things in performances like her playing a 12 string in Mona Lisa and Mad Hatters. Every guitar is unique in sound and playability. 12 strings are rich in sound but hard to play. 6 string acoustics make you work at it. Electric guitars make it so easy all you have to do is finger a chord and it makes music, without picking a string. So when I see someone play a variety of instruments, I tend to be a bit more impressed with what the artist is doing.
