Raptors' Calderon Ready To Howl

Jose Calderon walked out of the Raptors locker room about an hour before his team was to face the Boston Celtics on Sunday afternoon and in the distance a voice called out:

“You’re big time now, dog.”

And truer words have never been spoken.

The major transaction the Raptors made Saturday — jettisoning Jarrett Jack, David Andersen and Marcus Banks for Jerryd Bayless and Peja Stojakovic — not only gave general manager Bryan Colangelo some future flexibility but it gave Calderon a chance to breath.

For practically the first time in his six years in Toronto, he is the undisputed starting point guard and don’t think that didn’t enter Colangelo’s mind.

“I think we came to the conclusion last year at the end of the season that one of either Jose or Jarrett had to go,” Colangelo said Sunday in discussing the trade publicly for the first time.

“We went into training camp with the notion that it was going to work and maybe it would play out to be a favourable situation … but unfortunately … it never seemed to have a good chemistry or flow there.”

Of course, in the interim between the end of last season and the start of this one, Colangelo thought he had divested himself of Calderon only to have the Charlotte Bobcats back out of a summer trade.
