Reggie Williams Needs to Stop Shooting so Much and Do something else Okay its one game, but do you really want to have the fate of the Warriors riding on Reggie going one on one and jacking up 3s in the 4th quarter? Really? I've watched him this year and yes he's been a nice complimentary scorer but I think he's getting a little full of himself and forgetting he's a D leaguer who has had a hot streak and that he's supposed to fill in for Monta and Steph when they need him, not become the primary option. Warriors were right there midway into the 4th and then....Reggie jacking up 3s all over the place. Game over. Okay maybe he's a scorer and we need it with Lee out, but what else does he bring? Zip. Rebounding? Nah. Passing? Nah. Defense? Reaching for steals. You know why he was in the D league? He's simply one dimensional. That's it. Your thoughts?
While I DO agree with you for the mostpart, you really can't single him out on this one...the whole team needs to stop chucking up outside jumpers all night. It's so disheartening to watch. To his credit, Reggie made more than half of our free throws. EVERY FUCKING NIGHT we get beat at the free throw line, and it's because we have to be the softest team in the League, NOBODY will take it to the rack. At least Reggie will man up and go to the hoop...in my eyes, the fact that he does that makes me a little less annoyed when he shoots a jumper. But honestly, why the hell isn't Keith Smart telling them to take it to the rack!?!? We are sooo easy to defend when we get into that mindset. Meanwhile, everytime we breathe on someone taking it to the rim, they get to the line. It's disgusting. The only upside was that Radmonovic got a DNP-CD, which leads me to believe that Smart is smarter than I thought.
Sorry for the title, cannot spell "shooting." Idiot. In order to go to the bucket, there must be crisper cuts and passing when someone is on the move. Its not that hard, but you have to be committed to it. I see dive cuts that are half hearted and isos that leave 5 defenders watching the man with the ball. Even Reggie when he penetrates if he decides to pass, its trying to make the awesome pass, not the simple pass. Which gets him in trouble.
One thing about Reggie is that he usually plays under control. He's calm and smooth. When he first came in from the D-League, he looked like he was a vet already. But yeah, I think the staff is trying to make him believe he is the 6th man "scorer" if you will. Which is ok. But the truly great scorers don't have to tell themselves they are scorers. They don't have to force it. They let the game come to them. The reason why Nash is such a deadly scorer is because he is such a deadly passer and playmaker. A guy with Nash's build and athleticism has no business torching opposing defenses. The reason why he does it is because he is so under control, has such a great feel for the game, and people have to respect his passing and vision. If Reggie focused more on getting others involved, finding the open man, etc... his scoring would improve.
Agree with you AlleyOop and thats why I was not sold on Smart trying to get him to be a gunner type of 6th man. He doesn't have overpowering athleticism and his offensive relies on the fact that hes clever, shifty, and has some vision. His offensive game is pretty complete and I think its most effective when he lets the game come to him. Don't tell him to score, score, score just let him go out there and play his game- I think his scoring would actually improve as it would keep defenders honest. He does look a little lost though. Perhaps its because we shifted him from in training camp being a gunner to telling him to be our backup PG and now hes just kind of another bench player and I can't discern any specific role he has. In his defense though hes hit a lot of 3's late in games this season and is often playing alongside Monta and Steph down the stretch.
I think Reggie Williams has to be on the court with Ellis/Curry to be most effective. Reggie can manufacture offense, but only after Ellis/Curry have set the table for him. If the game is kept simple he rocks. His problem is that the small forward position is occupied by Dorrell Wright. Wright is the better overall utility guy as playmaker, 3 point shooter, ballhandler, and interior defender. Reggie is backing up Ellis on the depth chart, but if they take out Curry or move Ellis to point guard he's not as good IMO. Maybe the guy is just following orders? I mean our backcourt isn't very deep and I doubt the team chemistry is any good with guys like Charlie Bell/Rodney Carney/Radmo/Gadz. This pretty much forces Reggie to be a primary playmaker which he is not. Smart has to juggle minutes so that either of Curry or Ellis can play backup point, unless we're running plays through David Lee or Andris Biedrins. I really wish we could have gotten a Jason Terry type combo guard... It would have solved the whole what do we do to solve the gap at backup pg/sg? We better hope Jeremy Lin's development happens a lot faster.
I want Reggie to start making his shots. I think his game depends on his shot falling, so it's kind of silly in that respect to ask him to do other things when he's a scorer first and foremost.
This team is really missing a healthy Buike. He could get to the line and didn't force it. Are there any Kalenna look-a-likes out there to be had?
