David Lee released from hospital

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Golden State Warriors forward David Lee was released from a hospital Thursday after undergoing a second procedure on his left elbow to treat an infection.

He was released from Stanford Hospital and returned to his San Francisco home, where he will receive IVs and antibiotics and be monitored by Dr. Frank Chen. The Warriors said the redness around Lee's elbow was gone and swelling had nearly subsided. Lee's arm is in a splint for now to restrict movement as he heals.

"That's great just for the psyche of our team," first-year coach Keith Smart said after Thursday's practice. "When one of your better players, and a good guy all around, is not here ... before he gets on the floor the life that he brings to the team is pretty impressive. The players love him. They all miss him. We're glad he's going to finally get a chance to start coming back around the team."

Lee initially had surgery last Friday after he cut the inside of his elbow in a nasty collision with the mouth of the New York Knicks' Wilson Chandler, who left a fragment of a tooth in Lee's arm.

After Lee's elbow swelled and bled overnight, he went to an emergency room for antibiotics.

Smart isn't sure when Lee will play again, but he will be sidelined at least until early next week. Lee is scheduled to be re-evaluated Tuesday, a day before the Warriors play at Houston to start a three-game road trip. Smart didn't expect Lee to attend Friday night's home game against the Knicks, Lee's former team.

"We all just want to see him," Smart said. "Once we see him and now we can love on him we can start getting him back into the package."

Lee is averaging 14.3 points, 11.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 34.6 minutes in eight games for Golden State so far. The Warriors acquired him in a July trade with the Knicks to give them an improved presence on offense and rebounding.

Smart has been mixing and matching to fill in during Lee's absence because Golden State doesn't have a true backup power forward. Vladimir Radmanovic -- who is 6-foot-10 with long arms and helps create spacing on the court -- could earn the start against the Knicks, though Smart wasn't prepared to name his starter until Friday night.

"We're going to look at the guy who is playing well in that position," Smart said. "Everyone who's playing that position, they know what's expected and what we want from them and so we'll keep going that direction until we've locked into someone who can provide us some of the things that David can bring. They can't bring everything he does but they can still concentrate on the rebounding aspect and being heady with the basketball."

He's being re-evaluated on Tuesday, so it looks like in theory he could play next Wednesday, 11/24, against Houston, or Friday 11/26 against Memphis. At least the redness and swelling are gone... that's good news...

Wow, that turned out to be a much bigger injury than it first appeared to be.

I look forward to seeing the W's with him back for a good part of the season. 8th seed isn't out of reach, if not even higher, IMO.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what Amundson brings to the table. I think we know what we have in Lee. He's everything I hoped he would be. I don't expect much from Udoh, but that Biedrins/Lee/Amundson rotation should be fun to watch grow.

(11-22) 21:21 PST -- David Lee sat at his locker Monday night with a peripherally inserted central catheter in his right arm, stitches in his left arm and a variety of cuts, pokes and scrapes along each arm.

Still, he was wearing a huge smile.

Considering what he endured the past 12 days, it's no wonder the Warriors' power forward was in great spirits as he spoke publicly for the first time since having his elbow infected by an inadvertent Wilson Chandler bite Nov. 10.

"It was very, very scary," Lee said. "The way infections work, they couldn't find the right antibiotic. They were using strong stuff and nothing worked. They were telling me that it had to get better soon or they were going to have to cut it from the biceps to the forearm, filet it open and cut out the muscles.

"The fact that it could be limited to two weeks is a real blessing."

Lee expects to have the stitches removed today and the catheter Wednesday, and he's holding out hope that he can join the team at the end of its three-game road trip, which starts Wednesday at Houston. More likely, he'll be ready for their return to the Bay Area, when they play San Antonio next Tuesday or Phoenix on Dec. 2.

Lee isn't in game condition as he hasn't been allowed to break a sweat, just recently regained the full range of motion in his arm and still has to inject antibiotics four times a day. His catheter can't get wet, so he has the Warriors' staff cover it in Saran Wrap and showers at the arena.

"As soon as I get this out of my arm, I'm going back to work," Lee said. "I'll take it to the limit of what they'll let me do. My concern isn't getting out there, playing 40 minutes and getting double-doubles. My concern is getting out there and helping my team, even if that means 15 or 20 minutes.

"I'll have to check my competitiveness."

Lee has had two surgical procedures to flush out the infection - one in Fremont two nights after the injury and another at Stanford two days later. There have been lots of ups and downs and plenty of speculation about how the injury was initially treated.

"What worried me was with an ankle sprain or a knee-to-knee deal, you know how long you're going to be out," Lee said. "It's tough when you don't know what to expect. I've learned that you're better off to get bit by a rabid dog than a human."

He's doing better, but his return is still uncertain. They're now shooting for next Tuesday, 11/30, but even then it will be 15-20 minutes for the first several games. Glad he's doing better but bummed it was allowed to get out of control to begin with. From a simple, treatable wound, to two surgeries, and nearly a third which would "filet" his biceps open and take out muscle... that makes me queasy just thinking about it...

Thank god hes ok.

And yeah, I'm reading that hes shooting for a return on Tuesday with a best case scenario of returning Sunday and a possibility of coming back next Thursday.

Got his stitches and IV out today and hes been cleared to resume light conditioning. Earliest return would be Satuday @ Minny.
