After just missing a ton of pictures of our two year old son, my wife has requested that we buy a better camera. The current camera is a simple digital point and shoot that has the annoying delay between hitting the button and the picture being taken.

I'm out of the loop on cameras, but I've heard that SLR cameras don't have this issue. Is that true? Are they a good option or is there a better alternative? Ideal would be to spend less than a thousand, but I also don't want junk. Anyone have any recommendations?

Canon S95. Its a compact Digital camera for around $400. I just got one, it rocks. Takes great photos.

Or if you want a bigger body get a Canon G12.

Not a full SLR...I mean unless you want to start doing shit with lenses and crap, SLRs are just too bulky to travel with. Both have HD Video. The canon has a nice rotating display which is great at taking shots from odd angles.

But if you really want an SLR, just get the best Nikon or Canon you can afford. Its better if it takes HD Video if you have a small kid.

Thanks, hoss! So the Canon S95 is pretty responsive? Quality of the pictures is obviously important, but to keep me happily married I need a camera that also takes a picture when she hits the button. Avoiding the delay is my mission on this one.

Its pretty quick. I know what you're talking about though with the delay. I've had a few cameras like that where it autofocuses or some other crap with the light sensor. Its not as fast as an SLR but its pretty quick. I haven't really had a prob with it yet.

Check it out at a store, if they have a display model.
