"One of those "it finally happened" nights seemed to be in the making for Coyotes captain Shane Doan.

Doan, in his 15th season in the NHL, had gone 1,064 games without a hat trick - and Saturday night he came oh, so close. He scored twice in the first period and hit the post on a power play with 5:56 remaining.

Still, it was a red-letter night for the Coyotes, who responded from an ugly loss to defeat Dallas 5-2 at Jobing.com Arena on Saturday night in front of 11,410.

The win moved the Coyotes to 34 points, tied with Anaheim and two behind the Stars, who lead the Pacific Division.

"He (Doan) played a strong game, shot the puck hard, got rewarded going to the net," coach Dave Tippett said. "I thought our whole game, Shane included, that was much better effort for us. We wanted to push the pace as quick as we could, really try to dictate the game on the forecheck, and I thought we came out the first period and did that."

The Coyotes made a bold statement after Tippett expressed his displeasure Friday, the day after a 3-2 loss to Minnesota in which he said there was not enough effort from his team.

"We just had a little refocus, but it's the players that have to do it," he said. "The players recognize the importance of this game before we go on the road.

"My words were more geared to 'I wish we would have played better against Minnesota,' and their words were, 'Well, we'll make up for it today,' so all the credit to them, they knew what they had to do."

Goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov and the Coyotes defense were outstanding. Bryzgalov (12-5-6) made 33 saves; six of seven power plays were killed."
