"Rob Johnson, the Mariners' opening day starter at catcher in 2010, was designated for assignment on Monday, possibly ending his seven-year stint in the organization.

The Mariners needed to clear space on the 40-man roster for newly signed designated hitter Jack Cust. They now have 10 days to trade, release, or outright Johnson to the minors.

Johnson, 28, struggled both offensively and defensively in 2010 after having three surgeries during the offseason — one on each hip to repair a torn labrum, and one on his left wrist.

He homered in his first at-bat of the season, off Oakland's Ben Sheets, but finished the year with a .191 average, two homers and 13 runs batted in. On Aug. 3, Johnson was optioned to Class AAA Tacoma, where he finished the season. His nine passed balls in 61 games led the American League — one behind the major-league leader, Colorado's Miguel Olivo (in 111 games)."
