"Seems most every time the Calgary Herald election desk is poised to declare they've positively, categorically, officially dropped out of the race, the Calgary Flames go and do something completely unexpected.

Like, say, trash Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and the reigning Stanley Cup-champion Chicago Blackhawks 7-2 at home.

Or waltz into Rocky-ville (cue the Bill Conti theme music) and outgrind the East-pace-setting Philadelphia Flyers in a shootout.

Or, as Thursday, dominate the Dallas Stars right there in Big D after losing three on the trot to teams you'd see in the Before half of a Charles Atlas pump-you-up ad.

As the Flames re-convene today, 2 p.m., to begin their wildly improbable post-Christmas push at redemption, starting with a date against Ryan Miller and the Buffalo Sabres on Monday at the Scotiabank Saddledome, their prospects are, to put it mildly, bleak."
