Any thoughts on where Diaz and Gomi go from here? Both are coming off rather lackluster years. My take, is that Nate is never going to be as good as Nick, but they may keep him around because they have an investment in him. One more loss, and I expect Gomi to be Goni. He just doesn't seem to have it anymore. Maybe feed him to Penn?
Nate is a lot like Nick. I think they both have similar weaknesses. Nick's been getting good match-ups in Strikeforce so he is probably a bit inflated. I like them both, though. Nate is going to keep winning 2/3 or 3/5, that is just his lot. He is young but he doesn't seem to be evolving much as a fighter. He loses against guys with good wrestling or take-downs, period. All four of his UFC losses are the same (Kim, Maynard, Stevenson, Guida). Taken down and controlled. Nick is the same way, it's just been a long time since he fought a wrestler. Why not book Nate vs. Gomi? There is a built-in storyline with Nick seemingly getting the upset over Gomi a few years back. Recently we've learned that Gomi is not really the same fighter as he was but back then it was a surprise. Nate's style matches up with Gomi's and it would produce an entertaining fight, IMHO. Nate said he is happy to go up and down in weight and after being bullied by Kim maybe he'll consider taking a fight at 155, especially since it is against Gomi. I agree that Gomi is on the block with another bad loss. He doesn't seem to have the heart for it anymore. He tapped out before Guida even sunk in the guillotine, according to Guida.
My friends wanted to play FIFA and skip the prelims but I said I wanted to see Marcus Davis get knocked out. After the first couple rounds Davis was doing pretty good and the guys started crowing about putting the Xbox on but I said wait, wait for it, and sure enough--the big kabosh! Davis always had a good chin but two KO's in four fights (including getting knocked around by Diaz) might be a sign saying this road dead ends soon.
Davis' career is done. Once that chin is broke, it ain't no fixin it. Another Frankie Edgar thing--he has 4 FOTN's. So calling him boring just doesn't make sense.
I was watching and from my point of view I didn't look that tight at all, Gomi probably could have pulled his head out. but that's just from what i saw on the PPV it could have felt really tight.
3 Knockdowns by Maynard 10-8. He totally dominated Edgar in the first round. the 2nd went to Frankie 10-9 and the last 3 were pretty much a wash. Those rounds were close it could have gone either way depending on what the judges were looking for. Neither could get the dominant position, no one could really get a clean takedown, and they both took good shots at each other. Maynard was actually more of the stalker type the last 3 though. Draw was the right call IMO. A third fight is the right call.
Here are the scorecards from the Edgar/Maynard fight: The third and fifth rounds were the closest so no surprise to see them different. Rosales scored them for Edgar (winning Edgar the fight), Trowbridge scored them for Maynard (winning Maynard the fight), and Jarman split them calling it a draw. Them's the breaks.
Antonio McKee has been cut following his UFC 125 split-decision loss, putting him in the employment line next to Phil Baroni. I have a bit of a problem with this one. McKee hadn't lost in 15 fights going into this one and he only lost to Volkmann in a close split decision. Supposedly his performance was underwhelming but it seems to me that White is being vindictive. McKee comes from MFC, a promotion in Canada run by an asshole named Mark Pavelich who constantly rags on White and the UFC. Seems as though this is a big "fuck you" to the MFC since McKee was their champ. There are worse lightweights in the UFC than McKee who barely lost his one and only fight.
I give him props and you tell me im a fucking bitter fan? Screw yourself bro! Im not bitter at all MAMBA. For what? Im actually pissed at BJ, not at EDGAR. EDGAR beat BJ moving and bobbing and weaving. If it works why fix it? BJ had no answer to his boxing.. He made absolutely no adjustment in his second bout either and was outworked by Edgar again. BUT tell me this, MR I KNOW YOU ARE A BITTER FAN, HAS EDGAR ever FINISHED A FIGHT RECENTLY? ALL DECISIONS. NEVER WENT FOR THE KILL UNTIL THIS ONE. What do people remember Mamba? Bobbing and weaving for 5 fucking rounds or a CRUSHING KO? You dont see DVD's of the greatest decisions on MMA. You see DVD's of MMA's greatest knockouts and submissions. Greatest fights which almost ALWAYS end with a KO or Submission. Not no damn dance. If you like his style, fine, I respect that, but respect mine too bro. If I want to watch boxing, I'll watch Manny Pacquiao. If I want to watch MMA, they better show me some MMA! Not bobbing and weaving all day long... I just didnt think EDGAR was exciting prior to this fight with Maynard. SO WHAT? Your gonna shoot me for that? Im fucking bitter? That makes me a fucking bitter fan? I take offense. You think your the only one on this board who can cuss like a sailor when offended like you are in half your posts? After BJ KO'ed Hughes in 21 seconds no one said anything anymore even though most of you were against BJ PENN... Who's bitter? Only time anyone talks about BJ is when he loses. When he wins in convincing fashion, the crowds are silenced.
Good for BJ? The only shot he has then the WW division is if GSP moves up. The only shot he has back down @ LW is if Frankie loses the title. You don't need finishes to be an exciting fighter. Frankie's 4 FOTN awards seem to be enough indication that Dana finds him exciting.
ah trench.. knocking out matt hughes when he is in the tail end of his career doesnt mean much. not to me anyways.. but if it means something to you BRO then i respect that. we'll see how he does against fitch, if he knocks fitch out in convincing fashion than you might be drinking the right coloured kool-aid.
BJ has held two UFC titles simeutaneously at one point. Tell me how many other fighters have done so? Not the "AMAZING" GSP or SPIDER. Only one man besides BJ. The legend Randy. BJ is in a funk, but hey, when everyone counted him out, he finished a game Matt Hughes who thought his punch was a kick. You gonna tell me Matt was washed up already at 35? BJ's 32? Ask Randy Couture what washed up is... Hughes a 9 time UFC WW champ for a REASON! . COME ON BRO!!! He was on a nice 3 fight winning streak winning one my TKO, submission, and decision. Serra, Almedia, and one other. I forget. Serra was one of the dudes that beat GSP, or did you forget that too? LOL Besides the point, I have my opinion on what I call exciting. That fight against Maynard was exciting. I gave him his props. Fights prior to it were boring in my opinion... Edgar has a ton of new fans after his last fight, and has gained respect even by those who didnt care for him like myself. To call me bitter, because I have an opinion on what I think is exciting is just ridiculous. Some fucking idiots think popping balloons is the greatest turn on in the world? They get off on it. Do I give a shit? No. But you dont see me calling them bitter just because they'd rather fuck a balloon than a hot young chick. I have my opinions, they have theirs.. Isnt that what makes a SPORT a SPORT. If we all HUGGED each other and said Edgar was an exciting fighter and sang cumbaya, would that make you feel better? KTRULEZ, you know you thought HUGHES was gonna punish BJ! ADMIT IT! And all the Edgar fans i saw, had their heads down when he was getting tortured by Maynard in the 1st.. I was amazed at the heart and perseverance Edgar had. I gave him his props. Shit, if BJ had Edgars work ethics and heart, he'd be an animal. Wish he'd wake up already! He gets too fucking complacent. But its STILL ISLAND PRIDE!!!
Just a small quibble--BJ and Randy held titles in two weight classes but neither of them had them simultaneously. BJ wasn't the lightweight champion before he beat Matt Hughes. In his two lightweight title shots he lost to Jens Pulver and then drew Caol Uno. He won the lightweight belt in 2008 after losing to GSP & Hughes. Randy lost the HW title to Josh Barnett & Ricco Rodriguez before he beat Chuck Liddell. Then he lost the title to Chuck before he beat Tim Sylvia.
Also, if you want to talk about someone being bitter, take a look at Matt Hughes who keeps calling GSP boring. http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2011/1/5...eorges-st-pierre-boring-against-josh-koscheck
its not what i thought, its what i wanted to happen. its only logic that bj has superior standup compared to hughes and if i remembered correctly i posted that if hughes was stupid enough to stand up with bj, he'd get ktfo. i dont doubt BJ's talents, its his character i dont like. furthermore going into the fitch fight... i am a bit more confident to say that fitch will win but i can't say for certain just because you never know what type of bj penn will show up on fight night.
Im actually a bit concerned about the fight myself. Fitch is much bigger and stronger than BJ, no doubt about it. I am not sure what the best game plan is to counter the size differential. Im thinking he'll have to use his jab effectively, and set up Fitch in the stand up. I think fitch will bully him on the mat even though BJ has the superior Jitz. The last few fights BJ's takedown defense has been suspect. He's been taken down more than I can remember. KTRULZ, yeah, we never know what Penn will show up. I hate that too.... The minute they said FITCH after he beat Hughes, I was like Oh, shit... lol...
