Again, you and Treaty_Of_Batum are mistaking what I mean by "same style of player" (though I'll grant that it was an ambiguous usage). What I meant is that both are scoring guards with some passing ability (but little distributing vision, at least right now) who are undersized for the shooting guard position.
Care to bring facts? When Calderon is healthy and starting Bayless is averaging around 15 minutes a game. Its between him and Julian Wright for least minutes on the team. That is, when Calderon is healthy and starting. When he's not, Bayless is the PG by default.
Oh yeah............What the hell was I thinking? Maybe it was my conclusion and I projected over on Cho.
The offense runs much better with Mills than with Bayless. With Bayless it was either stand in one spot and wait for a pick then drive to the basket or size up his defender and shoot a 3.
And Matthews was signed after Martell was traded and before Cho was interviewed for the GM position. Cho had absolutely nothing to do with trading Webster or signing Matthews. He did trade Bayless to NO for a future draft pick, though. Oh, and he signed both Oberto and Marks. Not exactly an impressive resume so far. BNM
Mills did have some nice backdoor passes against Houston that I was impressed with. Seems to me he likes to run around the key more than bayless did and has better vision and patience. Bayless just seemed to travel down the center of the court, drive the lane and hoped he would get fouled underneith the basket. Heres Bayless what I'm talking about with his style. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMXkADZF4oQ I would rather have a more diverse point guard (Mills) who can find his teammates, creating assists, and throwing off his opponent and knocking down a 3. Bayless style just seems redundant and i remember his shots getting rejected a few times.
Heres some bayless highlights while he was a blazer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDOxoaJ8dlQ Heres another clip of bayless vs the pistons on 12/11/2010. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awaSYsc0-hk His style is quick to drive to the basket but in my mind he doesn't have great court vision to pass the ball underneith right by the basket. He would just rather just drive and hope that he would get fouled.
Since we are having such a hard time deciding which is better then I will take Mills and a draft pick over just Bayless. Isn't that what we need to be discussing since Cho saw that there would not be any minutes for one of these players and he moved one for a future asset, isn't that his job? I know we bash Cho since he hasn't traded a bag of chips for Lebron yet, but in the Bayless trade I think he did a good job getting something for a player that was a duplicate (in terms of impact) for us.
They have the same assist rate this season... And Bayless's 3PT shot with Toronto is only 2% less than Patty's.
I think Bayless, Mills, Armon Johnson and that pick (assuming NOH continues to play at a .500 pace, as they have recently) all have pretty similar overall value. One of those guys probably has a better career than the rest, but it's impossible for me to say which at this point. If I was forced to choose, I'd probably go with Armon. Anyway, Bayless was entering a stage of his career where he was going to demand PT and his rookie contract was shorter, whereas none of those other pieces were in that position. So the team gained more flexibility in trading him away. In hindsight it seems like a pretty decent move.
Hmm... I don't think that Bayless is closer to unrestricted free agency than either Johnson or Mills (since they're second rounders), although I might be mistaken. Ed O.
The fact is that we could have had both. We could use T-Rex right now. And if we trade Miller and don't get a PG in return, then it's going to be an interesting rest of the season. I'm glad everyone gets along on this team, but I think there's also room for an a-hole. I liked Bayless' dyspeptic disposition.
Pretty similar to my outlook. I project all of Bayless/Mills/Armon as career NBA bench players, which are quite replaceable every offseason. Getting rid of Bayless before he becomes disgruntled and gaining a first rounder was and is a good trade for the Blazers.
Well all I know is that if this new and improved Aldridge is here to stay then neither Patty or Jerryd is ideal to pair with him; both guys call their own number far too often and neither seems to possess the kinds of setup skills that a post scorer needs to flourish. The only guys that consistently put LMA in a good position to score and look for him when he seals his man are Miller, Camby and Rudy and will any of them be here after the trade deadline or the lockout? I swear this franchise's search for a long-term point guard in the last decade feels like the hunt for El Dorado at times.
Come to think of it, I don't know either. Oh well. Even if that reason gets set aside, I think the rest still stands. There comes a point where a young mediocre player is no longer "just happy to be there" and wants his spot in the spotlight. I got the feeling Bayless was about there. I know you'd probably say, "Shut up and suffer dude," which is probably true. But if you can avoid that scenario by swapping him out for a likely similar yet younger value (as we did with that pick) you might as well.
Sorry I missed this post. You're pulling that 15 mpg number out of your ass. In any case, 15mpg does not put him as the 12th-to-15th fewest minutes per game on the team. Ed O.
Toronto may be looking for another PG: Toronto Raptors point guard Jose Calderon(notes) was out earlier this week and the team "looked lost offensively" in losses to the Boston Celtics and Chicago Bulls, the Toronto Sun reports. Then Calderon returned Wednesday, scoring 20 points and assisting 17 times, to help the team to a 120-105 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Raptors coach Jay Triano told the Sun that his other two point guards -- Jerryd Bayless(notes) and Leandro Barbosa(notes)- - "are more scorers, sometimes we don't get the movement that we need [when they are playing the point]. It makes a world of difference." http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/rumors/post/Raptors-looking-for-point-guard-?urn=nba-304616 This is what I've been saying about Bayless in Ptd. He can score, but is not an effective PG (yet?).
Uh duh. C'mon Raptors management, you should've known this when you traded Jack for him. Meanwhile, that pick is looking better and better every week.
