If the Ducks win the national championship game on Monday what's bigger in Oregon championship history?
I was only two when the Blazers won the title so I don't remember shit. I am a season ticket holder for both now but find myself loving the game of college football more. So, I go with the Ducks winning Monday night. GO DUCKS!
It's easy to get caught up in the moment, but the Blazers represent the entire state. There are too many fans of the Beavers, Vikings, etc for the Ducks to surpass the Blazers.
Blazers, because it gave birth to a following that impacts us more. We still remember the 91 WCFs, or the 90 and 92 NBA Finals, and (sigh) game 7. I think as a rule, fans of pro teams hold a different bond to the team than fans of college teams do. I am willing to bet you that most of us honestly don't know who the Ducks played in a bowl game in 2005. Or 6, or really still have a twinge of depression over last years RB (or conversely, if you're a Beaver fan, the last 86 civil wars). But there are people who still cringe when they see highlights from "game 7" The Blazers winning a title connects us all, we all share a common bond with the Blazers, we don't with the Ducks (or Beavers). I might feel this way because I was a Blazer fan first and slowly became a Beaver fan as I grew up. I'd rather the Blazers win a title (again) than the Beavers or Ducks. I think a lot of that has to do with longevity of the players playing in Portland. There is a lot of change-over in college football, and that plays a part imho. Even though I'm a Beaver fan, it would be cool if the Ducks won. But I think the whole state would celebrate the Blazers winning a title (esp if they had a strong season long run). Front runners aside (truthfully, they shouldn't count...they'll jump on whatever bandwagon there is), I think even aside from a NT, the Blazers rule the state. I honestly think that the average Oregonian (and SW Washingtonian) could name current Blazers, vs more than 2 players on the Ducks. Outside of James and ....Thomas (?), I can't name more than 2 players on the Ducks. I could be wrong.
I have been a die hard fan for Duck Football and Blazer basketball for the same amount of time. I was 11 in 1970. This is a really tough call for me, but I think NCAA football is a little bigger. 30 NBA teams, but a hell of lot more college teams. The passion for College football in other parts of the country is unbelievable. Again it is a really tough call. But Monday night is huge. More demand for tickets than the last 20 super bowls. Unfortunately I have a bad felling about the outcome. But I will be there.....just in case history is made.
You're a die hard Duck & Blazer fan, and have a hard time deciding (although you picked the Ducks). I think this says it all, because the Beaver fans, etc would push this to the Blazers easily. In other words, I think a higher % of the state are Blazer fans than Duck fans.
No doubt. But I viewed the question to be "what's bigger for the State" not "what's bigger to those in the state". Blazer basketball is by far bigger to Oregonians. But Winning the Natty is a big deal throughout the country. But then again I travel to SEC and Big Ten country for work, so my perception could be off.
They're both corrupt and my favorite teams won't be winning either one anytime soon, so wouldnt they be equal?
I'm not trying to compare the importance of a NBA championship vs a NCAA Football championship. I'm talking about right here, right now, this state, this moment in time. It's been a rough few years for the country, Oregon has been hit a little harder than most. If the Ducks win, it can't help but overshadow the Blazer's championship. From the internet to the explosion of cable TV the coverage is exponentially bigger. Now if the Ducks were to win this year and then repeat next year this one would be bigger, and as soon as the Blazers win again it would trump any Duck championships. But for right now in this place, IMO, a Duck championship surpasses our only Blazer championship.
I won't care about the Ducks if they win. I don't care about the 1977 championship much either.. since I was born in '92.
I grew up around the corner from Autzen Stadium. Honestly, if the Ducks win this whole thing, it's the biggest thing to happen to Eugene/Springfield, Oregon in my lifetime. Can't think of anything bigger. Mary Decker Slaney getting tripped at Olympics, Diane Downs, sniper on Autzen, Grateful Dead concerts, Ken Kesey, can't think of anything else off hand.
Blazers championship without a doubt. The state is somewhat split when it comes to Ducks and Beavs... so there are probably far more Trail Blazer fans then there are Duck fans. Go Beavs!
technically, they're the UNIVERSITY of Oregon Ducks, the only one that represents the state is Oregon STATE Beavers.
30 teams that have a legitimate play off versus 100+ teams that compete in a beauty contest. The Blazers championship is real and if the Ducks win it wasn't via a playoff so it's suspect from the get go. But the original question was which is bigger. I don't care how old you were or if you were born or not, this isn't about you. It's about which is bigger to Oregon. It's no contest: Blazers champ was bigger. Count me among the many who hate the Ducks and have an ever growing contempt of Duck fans. The Duck fans will appreciate a win (if there is one) but there's a big chunk of us who aren't moved by it. So if you go across all Oregonians I think Blazers win this little hypothetical. Speaking of my contempt of you Duckies, how many of you Blazer/Duck fans are advocates of Kevin Love and how many of those sent the death threats and mocked his disabled brother when UCLA played at the Pit?
Bah, they're right up there with the Portland STATE Vikings. That just means neither school has money.
