The guy is obviously psycho, and this complicates matters for people who are trying to apply lessons from this tragedy to wider social issues. But, if I had to guess, I would say that the culture of violence and fear that the far right has injected into politics had to have some influence on this guy.

The thing to remember is this: psychos don't work in a vacuum. They take just as much input as mentally stable people do. How they process the input they receive is what sets them apart. I'm not a clinical psychologist, so I can't say how this particular crazy person was interpreting what he was seeing. Either way, I would rather not have anyone, insane or otherwise, be exposed to politicians suggesting violence is somehow productive.

VITRIOL!!!! RHETORIC!!!! Let's just make shallow, vapid casual relations. He shot a democrat, therefore he must be a teabagger!

But when you look at it, the arizona killer was a registered Independent, atheist, spouted comunist doctrine, and was a 9/11 truther. Yes...lets blame the far right for this. He obviously clinged to their beliefs.

why can't people just be crazy?

Paranoid schizophrenics do work in a vacuum. They interpret things how THEY want to construe them and invent realities. The left is doing nothing here than using this tragedy to silence their critics and try to pass some blame.

archery is much less offensive than crosshairs.

Can we agree that it's lame no matter who uses it?

I'm not going to debate the effectiveness of the ad, just the absolute idiocy of anyone suggesting that either of these contributed to the registered Independent, atheist, communist-doctrine spewing 9/11 Truther man who wanted to be a woman shooting a Congresswoman and 19 others.

I mean seriously, if you want to talk about how Palin's a nutjob in her own right who isn't smart enough or popular enough to be an effective politician/President, that's one thing. To attempt to just utilize a tragedy as an excuse to bash someone or some group politically is pretty reprehensible.

Where did you read this? I've been keeping up with the story and haven't seen any of this reported.

We're just playing arm chair psychiatrist here but I think there is some merit to what Hoojacks wrote. The Virginia Tech shooter referenced "martyrs like Eric and Dylan" ( Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, the Columbine High School shooters) in one of his videos. In the middle of the civil rights movement Charles Manson predicted an apocalyptic race war.

To be fair the right is doing the same thing. The Tea Party Express issued a statement calling the shooter a "leftist"LINK

his myspace page was pretty heavily reported...the original page was posted earlier in the thread, and the Huffington post had a similiar, though not exact, synopsis.

I don't. I think that making those states a target is entirely legitimate.

The use of a target or a crosshairs seems fine as far as identifying that concept in a graphical form, and I don't feel any differently just because some nutjob shot some people.

^^^ Let's do away with the term "battleground state" as well.

    Sheesh.

There's nothing wrong with the rhetoric. Each side targets vulnerable seats. I don't see the big deal in the DNC's graphic or Palin's.

Yes. That is, just as a lot of the caricatures during the health debate "rallies" that the Tea Party did.

Our nation is not exactly filled with the most creative (or intelligent) group of debaters.

Re-read what I said. I said Yes, it is...JUST AS a lot of the .....

As in, this one is just as stupid and deplorable, just as the ones done by the Tea-partiers/whatever are too.

Hanging a public figure in effigy is nothing new, and it is free speech.

I think the shooter is more likely to read the Daily Kos than have seen that graphic somewhere.
