<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>PITTSBURGH -- Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was badly hurt in a motorcycle crash Monday and undergoing surgery. The extent of his injuries was not known. Roethlisberger was in serious but stable condition, said Dr. Larry Jones, chief of trauma at Mercy Hospital. "He was talking to me before he left for the operating room," Jones said before the operation. "He's coherent. He's making sense. He knows what happened. He knows where he is. From that standpoint, he's very stable." The 24-year-old Roethlisberger likes to ride without a helmet, a habit that once prompted coach Bill Cowher to lecture him on the dangers. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported that Roethlisberger wasn't wearing a helmet. The Associated Press reported it wasn't clear whether he was wearing a helmet or not. The crash happened at an intersection at the edge of downtown at about 11:30 a.m. A pool of blood was still visible there by early afternoon. Police spokesman Lt. Kevin Kraus said police and homicide units were investigating the crash, something standard when there is an accident with critical injuries. Kraus would give no details on the extent of Roethlisberger's injuries or if anyone else was injured. The accident occurred on Second Avenue near the intersection of 10th Street in Pittsburgh, around 11:30 a.m. The route is one often taken in traveling to the Steelers' facility in the Southside section of the city.Steelers backup quarterback Charlie Batch was at the emergency room. He had no comment. A silver Chrysler New Yorker with damage to the front passenger fender was removed and Roethlisberger's bike was loaded onto a flatbed truck. Police were detouring traffic around the crash scene as onlookers and media gathered. One of his agents, Ryan Tollner, is in route to Pittsburgh for what was supposed to be a pre-planned trip and will arrive later Monday. In only his second year in the NFL, Roethlisberger became the youngest quarterback to lead a team to the Super Bowl championship. He was 23 when he did it last February. Roethlisberger has said in the past that he prefers not to wear a helmet. He has pointed out Pennsylvania's 35-year-old state law requiring helmets to be worn was amended to make helmets optional. In May 2005, Cowher warned him about safe riding after Cleveland tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. was injured in a motorcycle accident. Winslow tore knee ligaments and was lost for the season. "He talked about being a risk-taker and I'm not really a risk-taker. I'm pretty conservative and laid back, but the big thing is to just be careful," Roethlisberger said at the time. "I'll just continue to be careful. I told him we don't ever ride alone, we always ride in a group of people, and I think it makes it even more safe." Roethlisberger continued to ride after Winslow's accident and that angered Terry Bradshaw, who quarterbacked the Steelers to four Super Bowl victories during the 1970s. Visiting the Steelers' training camp last summer, Bradshaw remarked: "Ride it when you retire."</div><div align="center">Source</div>Wow, ironic because I was just listening to him live earlier today on "Mike and Mike In The Morning." Must have happened right after that. Pretty stupid of him riding a motorcycle without a helmet though, but hopefully the kid will be alright.

He's really, really lucky. He got some knee and jaw injuries supposedly, but they're talking about him being back before the season starts. It should be interesting to see if that actually happens, and if he'll be 100% at that point.

These pro players need to start realizing that those motorcycles are dangerous, and to stay away from them. In just a three year span we have seen Jay Williams, Kellen Winslow, and Ben Roethlisberger all three get hurt. What makes it even worse, was that all three of them are/were extremely young in their careers, and things was looking very promising for all three of them. Hopefully this will open Roethlisberger's eyes, and all the other pro players eyes.

I hope this is nothing that will end up negatively effecting his career long term. He is a great young player and something like this could be tragic to his career.BUT. Isn't there a term in the contract that says you can't ride a motorcycle?

He couldn't be stupid enough to do that, could he. If not this could be another Jay Williams in the making. [IMG] But nah, I think he'll be fine. So far, all I've heard is it's mostly facial damage, nothing too serious. Jay Williams' accident was much more dramatic breaking his pelvis.

Jay Williams' accident was much more dramatic breaking his pelvis.</div>There is a standard clause in EVERY professional sports contract, whether it be the NFL, NBA, MLB, etc., that says that the player is not allowed to participate in an activity with "a significant risk of personal injury." However, since there is nothing that actually says he was not allowed to ride a motorcycle, if the Steelers were for some reason going to take away some of his money, the case would be heard by an arbitrator. There are some players who specifically have clauses in their contracts that prohibit them from riding motorcycles. I believe Jay Williams was one of them. If the Bulls wanted, they could have released him and not paid him anything, but instead they decided to give him $3 million out of his $7 million contract when they released him.Now that this has happened, I'm sure there will be plenty of contracts that prohibit players from riding motorcycles. It wll become an even bigger topic than it already had become.

wow beating us in ot with maddox throwing the ball wow, beating us the year before with maddox startign and ben being thrown in wow. beating us the year before wow, we were the nfl's bitches that yeari will admit i jumped the steelers bandwagon in 2000 because that's when i finally started watching football, so i decided to look at the last six years that i've been following them because that's all that matters to me is the last 6 years and against the ravens we are 7-5, i wouldn't call that owning, y'all do play us tough but we are over .500 against y'all

You see what happens with Jay Williams. He wore a helment and he was the luckiest man on earth to have lived. That right there should be an incentive to wear a helmet. He's so lucky he got what he got.

Well, the good news is he was released from the hospital and now he has many months to go through rehab and recover. Hopefully, he'll start wearing a helmet, a very big one.
