It took a whole 60 minutes for the Calgary Roughnecks (2-0) to defeat the defending champs Washington Stealth 13-11 on Sunday night. The two teams were back and forth the entire game until Scott Ranger(Image) potted his first of the game with 1:35 left to give the Roughnecks a 12-11 lead. With the Stealth goalie Matt Roik pulled in favor of the extra attacker, Roughnecks defenseman Mike Carnegie tossed one into the gaping cage for the insurance goal. In the first half, the first quarter was clearly all Roughnecks while the second quarter was all Stealth. Stealth forward Lewis Ratcliff opened up the scoring, however the Roughnecks responded quickly, pocketing four in a row and six of the next seven goals to take a 6-2 lead after one. However in the second quarter, the Stealth fought back, scoring six goals themselves and only allowing two, tying the game at 8 a piece going into the half. In the third quarter, both teams scored a pair, making it 10-10 heading into the final frame. Stealth forward Rhys Duch scored his second goal of the game part way through the fourth, giving his team their first lead of the game. Rigger Dane Dobbie completed his hat trick to tie it up. Also contributing for the Roughnecks was Jeff Shattler (3G, 1A), Ranger (1G, 3A), Daryl Veltman (1G, 3A) Kaleb Toth (1G, 2A) and Cory Conway (3A). Responding for the Stealth was Ratcliff (4G, 2A), Duch (2G, 3A), Luke Wiles (2G, 1A) Cam Segwick (1G, 2A) and Kory Kowalyk (3A). The Stealth more than doubled up the Roughnecks in shots, 55-27. Next up for the Roughnecks is a date with the Calgary Mammoth next Saturday night at the Saddledome.
