In 2009, ten days before he was scheduled to fight Fedor Emelianenko in Affliction's third PPV event ("Trilogy"), Josh Barnett failed a drug test and was suspended. He asked for a retest and failed that as well. Affliction canceled their event, their promotion folded as a result, and the rest is history. It was the third failed drug test of Barnett's career, the most of any active MMA fighter.

When his latest suspension ran out Barnett applied for a fight license in California. The CSAC asked him to appear and grilled him about his past steroid use. He said he was unprepared to answer questions and asked that the hearing be postponed so he could attend with legal representation. The CSAC agreed and rescheduled for February 4th--a date Barnett has said he will intentionally miss--and the CSAC will decide on whether or not to grant him a license in his absence.

If they decide not to give him a license then it makes things complicated for Strikeforce. They mostly put on shows in California. They will have to arrange for the second quarter-final show of the GP to be in another state--likely one without an athletic commission since most of the commissions tend to uphold each other's suspensions and whatnot and may not be inclined to give Barnett a license after being denied by California. If Barnett advances in the tournament they will have to continue to avoid California and it's CSAC allies.

The wishy-washy nature of the tournament seems to be by design for problems like this.

    Speaking of drug testing...

Reportedly Fedor's camp are still insisting that Overeem be subjected to Olympic-style doping tests should both fighters progress to the semi-finals.

Never mind that the guy Fedor is fighting in the first round was recently suspended for steroids...

This could be a serious problem (look at Mayweather vs. Pacquiao never happening).

It seems strange to me that M-1 would push so hard for a fight with Barnett yet the thought of fighting Overeem requires such special oversight.

The more I read about Fedor... the more I think he is a punk.
