Two weeks after extending an olive branch to coach Tony Sparano, the Miami Dolphins have given the general manager who helped orchestrate the mea culpa his own new deal. The Dolphins announced Saturday that Jeff Ireland had signed a multiyear contract extension. "I appreciate the support of the entire Dolphin organization, from Steve Ross all the way down," Ireland said in a news release, referring to the team owner. "And I'm going to continue to work as hard as I can with Steve, Tony Sparano, and the rest of the team to bring the Dolphins back to their long-time position as one of the elite teams in the NFL." Ireland, who with Ross courted former Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh before he joined the San Francisco 49ers, was also key in coming to terms with Sparano in the aftermath earlier this month.
