Graphics as in the score box? Promos that we run? which ones? Another thing, we have nothing to do with the production of the commercials and I was curious what you meant by the software we use to edit video. That's my job, so I was curious what you meant. I work on a machine called an EVS.
Yeah, stuff like the box score and logos/frames that flash across the screen during the game breaks (the box score at the bottom is actually pretty decent though. I like the diagonal shape of it). Also with the "Home court" show, half-time, the areas where they try to provide stats or keys to the game. Ohhh, a good example is right before the game starts when you guys use the video of that band playing the Blazers theme song. That one is a little awkward and everything just looks kind of weird to me. As for software, what I was getting at was the graphic editing software like Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator that designs the frames and layouts. I know that those two are primarily used for still-picture purposes, but you can usually make a 3D image from those and export them out onto videos. I'm not exactly sure if you guys have different methods of adding graphics to the videos.
Ya, all that stuff I don't deal with. I cut the highlights, instant replays and music videos during the actual game. In my opinion, you can't compare our show to a network broadcast. The budgets are at least 10X what we have to deal with. I work on network broadcasts all the time and there are 4 times the amount of people on those crews compared to ours. You should check out other local NBA broadcasts and then tell me what you think,
Perhaps if you rented a HD box through comcast things will look crisper and the overall broadcast looks like a lot better in HD.
Hey ----> watch some other NBA networks and see how they compare to the Blazers. Don't bash them if you have nothing to compare with or make so much judgement.
Yeah, me and HCP have already established this. Either way, if I go look at the other broadcasts and see that they look funky, I'll just wonder why all these teams can't get better designers. I say this in no bragging way, but in my prime of photoshop work, I could produce some better looking graphics. And I learned most of my skills outside of schooling.
Money. They don't need to develop better programming because they know the fans will watch anyway. Do you think the fans watch the Blazers because they have a good program? They have the advantage of being the only game in town. You either want to watch the team or you don't. Why spend a lot of money on something that really doesn't make much of a difference in viewership?
Or maybe you need to bring back the jazz band intro FTW!!!!!!!!!!!! Nothing says NBA like a bunch of guys not really playing instruments off beat.
Designing for television is simply different than designing for the Web or for print. Generally you have less resolution (standard definition TV is 640x480, iirc) and the audience tends to be sitting much farther back from the screen... which means that details get lost even when you do have the pixels to play with. Local television commercials almost invariably stink, and that's not the fault of the Blazers or its crew The only complaint I have is the terrible picture that I get on Comcast in Seattle when I watch the Blazers. There is no HD signal and the SD looks like total crap... but I don't think that THAT is the Blazers' fault, either. I think that the Blazers' actual production value is as good as any team's in the NBA, and I've been watching League Pass for years. Ed O.
That's a Comcast/CSN promo that they produce/direct... not Blazer Broadcasting. I think we have one of the best broadcasting and production crews in the business, especially if you consider we are a small market team. There are several teams that dont even do all their games in HD!!!
my only real complaint with the broadcasts, and its not just the blazers as it happens in all basketball games, is after every score, why is it necessary to show a close up of the guy who made the basket? at least twice a game the inbound pass is stolen or other game action is missed while we are stuck watching some guy run up the court. couldnt they just have a pop up next to the score saying "mathews 2 point fg" or something? or when the announcers are talking about a coach or a player on the bench, do we really need to see his face for 10 seconds while game action is happening? couldnt they have a pip at the bottom of the screen? pip would be nice for replays also to ensure game action isnt missed. i just dont like missing plays because someone else is deciding what they think is important to viewers, especially considering pip technology is decades old.
Ed speaks the truth. When I watch SD games on my leaguePass on my HDTV they always look like shit! Thanks BeerBoy for the props!
Ditto. It is handy when I am fast forwarding because I can tell who scores without actually having to see the action. =)
