<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>By Mike WellsMike.wells@indystar.comJermaine O'Neal is confident he'll be in an Indiana Pacers uniform next season, but he can't speak beyond that. It's all right now: Jermaine O'Neal said Wednesday that the Pacers are closer to contending than rebuilding, despite a disappointing season. - Charlie Nye / The Star The All-Star forward said Wednesday during his first interview since the Pacers' season ended May 4 that next season could determine his future in Indianapolis. O'Neal's seven-year, $127 million deal expires in 2009-10."I told (Pacers CEO) Donnie (Walsh) after this year, if things don't work out, then I don't feel the need to have this organization, this city, the owners pay my salary," O'Neal said. ". . . If I can't get the job done and I don't have the year (I expect), I shouldn't be here. If I'm training and focusing at the highest level I've ever done and I still can't get the job done, then we have to cut ties."He doesn't expect that to happen, however. O'Neal repeatedly said the Pacers are closer to contending than being in the NBA draft lottery, vowed to come into camp in the best shape of his life and guaranteed he'll have "a career year."O'Neal plans to lower his playing weight from 265 to 250 pounds. He'll also start boxing to help his footwork and conditioning.Walsh praised O'Neal's maturity and predicted that next year they'll talk "about what a great year he had and the team had."O'Neal, limited to 95 games the past two seasons, also said he and president Larry Bird have mended their relationship."Me and Larry haven't had a relationship up until the end of the year when I met with him," O'Neal said. "We were on two totally different pages. I was thinking one thing; he was thinking another thing. We're fine now."</div> Wow, thats interesting, if he's putting in maximum effort why wouldn't he succeed? I would like to know what he means, kind of confusing.

I think he just plain wants out of Indiana. He is ready to out forth his best effort, but probably doen't think his team can play at championship level.

I agree with Pistonfan11. He probably does want out because he doesn't see the Pacers going anywhere. They need more talent on their roster. And if he really wants to even consider contending for the championship, he needs to join another team.

Sounds like a nice way of saying, "screw you guys, you suck and I want out to play for a championship."

He should go out and have a great year at least so they can get some decent stuff for him, unlike Ron Ron.

I haven't seen anything like this before. if he does have a bad year, that will sure cut his trade value down tho.

O'Neal has made some dumb comments, this is just another one of those.

Pacers won't contend for a championship enxt season so looks like Jermaine O'neal might not be a Pacer for long. They will get off to a great start though and everyone will make some big deal about it talking about how the Pacers are back and everything and than just like every year something will happen rather its a suspension, injury, or just a plain choke and everything with go downhill.

<span style="font-family:Book Antiqua">Hmm... JO is looking for a way out of Indiana? Interesting.Anyway, you can tell that the Pacers will barely make it to the Playoffs this go-round. They lost Peja, still have the same horrible team that barely made the Playoffs, and haven't improved since last season with that same team that barely made the Playoffs. I wonder how Reggie Miller would have been doing with this team if he was still playing...</span>
