"Whenever the NFL free agency period begins, there's going to be an assortment of temptations for the Jaguars, because they'll feel compelled to spend money on some glaring holes at linebacker and in the secondary. One of general manager Gene Smith's favorite sayings is "the best ability is availability," which is why the Jaguars shouldn't even bother to kick the tires on Bob Sanders, the supremely talented safety released Friday by the Indianapolis Colts.

Is there any player in the entire league who fits the term "damaged goods" more than broken-down Bob?

The two-time Pro Bowl safety is fabulous when healthy, but he's missed 39 of 48 games the past three seasons with various injuries and 64 of 112 games for his seven-year career. Even the Colts, who could conceivably re-sign him at a lower price, have to be questioning the risk.

Sanders, who turns 30 next week, is just one of a multitude of free-agent options at a Jaguars position of huge need. Smith should focus on acquiring players with a better track record of durability. Yes, those guys are usually more expensive, but a healthy player is a better alternative than an inactive one. "
