Among other things, saying no to the proposition that you're not trying to argue. $100k + roster spot isn't worth giving up the chance to trade him down the road and recoup some of that money, and/or get better fitting players. It's absurdly not even close to worth it.

    Its simple

Rip is worth $2.5M on a 3 year deal after this season - say $7.5M for 3 years.

    He's owed $25M over 2 with the Pistons ?

Make him an offer at $12.5M ( which he rejects ) and then negotiate to split the difference .....if both parties agree around a $15M buyout its probably a fair result for both sides.

Pistons save $10M and a roster spot and get rid of a malcontent

Rip gets $15M and opportunity to make up a substantial component of the foregone over the next 3 years on a winner.

    Fair deal.

Okay, I'm with Mike that y'all be looney toons. There is a difference between Paul Alen, James Dolan and whomever is trying like hell to get rid of the Pistons. It's never a fair deal to give away like fifteen million dollars (at the very least.) You try selling that at a board meeting. Rips isn't going to get bought out. It's just not going to happen.

Except that until you cut cancer you can't heal

Would you rather pay a guy $15M or $25M when you accept you will get no productive value from him on your team , and where ,the only extrinsic value MAY be at the mid season deadline in 2 years time as a cap cleanser - which LIKELY entails taking back a component of garbage from another team who is also looking for a refuse station

And this is the likely scenario for the Pistons. They're going to suck a lot of ass into the foreseeable future and sure Joe can dangle Rip and young talent like Greg Monroe for the 2013 version of Melodrama ....but as if the stud is going to hang and re-up in Detroit given the current state of City and franchise

In the reality of the circumstamces , Rip's expiring in 2 years isn't going to make your shorts go vertical. Keep it real, put your $10M in your pocket now , and focus on building chemistry and respectability with what you got before you try and hit the home run or before lightening strikes and delivers you a Rose or a Griffin.

The Bulls could trade John Lucas III and $3M to Detroit for Jonas Jarebko to help ease Detroit's financial pain.

With a wink and a nod. I'd only do it after Rip was bought out and signed with us, though.

I'm not a super big fan of Rip Hamilton just based on competitive history, but calling him worthless or a cancer seems a pretty big stretch. Especially when everyone is salivating to have him on our team. Don't like his contract? Well, there are plenty of other players with equivalently bad contract out there who could also use a change of scenery.

The Pistons need players at every position but SG. This is an easy deal to find... lots of teams have middling players to give and could use a good SG

If I was owner I'd just fire the coach, and try to get a fresh start with Rip. That's how these things work, for better and usually worse. The fact that the Pistons haven't is probably more of a sign of where they are at with their ownership turnover.

I think the need to cover for past failure runs very, very strong when you're talking about ten to twenty-five MILLION dollars, especially given the anticipated ownership turnover.

Does the new ownership want to pay $25M or $15M (in FJ's scenario)? The $25M or $15M is a sunk cost - they're stuck paying it either way.

I don't think team's are salivating for Rip and the$25M that's still owed on his contract.

I think the saliva glands fire up if he waived and they can get him for $2M

    Big difference

And he and Prince are cancers on that ball club. Maybe not on another club in a better situation but right now they are in which way you cut it.

They are at a stage where they need to feature someone ...and I reckon its Greg Monroe . Move Stuckey to the 2 where he belongs , get a real point guard and put some fresh new toughness on the forward line

Let Charlie, Ben ad Will Bynum be the back up scoring whores in the 2nd unit ..but give them some tough assed nasty to rebound and plug the interior

Time to take their lumps. With quicker pain comes quicker recovery

Like the Economy actually...right Mike ? Denny ?

I don't exactly think they're cancers. It's just that their best days are well behind them and their best value is to a team in contention where they'd fill a role suited to them.

They're taking away minutes from guys who'll be around for 3 years on a team going nowhere until then.

Yeah, it's time to take their lumps.

Yeah Rip's fallen off but I think he'd be fine on a good team both on the floor and in the locker room. Right now the Pistons are full of players who should be 3rd/4th options. Their coaching situation has been a mess since Larry Brown left and Rip and the vets of their glory days all knew it. They're wallowing in mediocrity, signing mid-level FAs instead of tearing it down and finding blue chippers to rebuild. IMO if you put him on a team like the Bulls he'll provide positive veteran leadership/experience and if defenses are worried about Rose/Boozer etc. it oughta be easier for him to get some better shots.

Richard Hamilton(notes), G, Detroit Pistons: It’s no secret that Hamilton wants out and the Pistons want to grant his wish. The problem: He’s due $12.5 million next season and at least $9 million the season after.

If the Pistons somehow reached a buyout agreement with Hamilton and waived him, the Boston Celtics would have interest in signing him. As for a trade?

“Teams that can absorb his salary are asking for a lot,” one league executive said.

There's no quicker pain/quicker recovery dynamic here because if the Pistons simply buyout/waive Rip, then he's on the books for two more seasons after this one. They have lots of options that are better.
    1. They wait until the new CBA takes effect. There's been some talk of amnesty like provisions that might let them be entirely rid of him with no competitive or financial repercussions. We don't know, but the cost isn't truly sunk until they buy him out.
    2. I can think of all sorts of teams that would gladly swap players to get Rip. The Pistons aren't going to get out from under his deal, but they could turn it into a guy that would actually play for them. Dallas (Brendan Haywood), New Jersey (Travis Outlaw), Atlanta (Marvin Williams), Milwaukee (Corey Maggette), Toronto (Jose Calderon), the Wiz (Rashard Lewis, Kirk Hinrich, Andre Blatche), Hornets (Trevor Ariza+Jarrett Jack), Cavs (Antawn Jamison), Suns (Channing Frye, Hakim Warrick, Josh Childress), and Blazers (Brandon Roy) could make obvious use of him and offer something back that the Pistons could make obvious use of.

That doesn't mean the player they're getting back is equal value, but if the choice is A) Paying a guy $25M to play for some other team, and then having to spend additional millions to get guys to play on your team, or B) turning that $25M into guys that will actually fill holes on your team, it's a complete no brainer.

Rip/Prince/TMac to the Hornets for Ariza/Jack/Banks/Green would give the Hornets an immediate upgrade to their playoff contention chances and give the Pistons a salary neutral addition of a better PG and SF who'll actually be on their team next year. The Mavs and Suns could probably both make comparable trades.

    DC,

Most of those guys are of near zero help to Detroit and the ones that are would only cause them to get worse draft picks with which to rebuild.

There are now several reports that Detroit and Rip are willing to do a buyout, it's just a matter of the terms.

Oh? Could you please link to them? I suppose if this is again a matter of literal absurdity (like... being $25M apart on terms of a buyout is "just a matter of the terms") you might be correct. I haven't seen any reports that actually state willingness to do a buyout by the players, just that other teams would be interested if there is one.

If Lebron suddenly demands a buyout from the Heat, I want to be the first to profess my interest as well.

Most of what I read on the internet is IF he is bought up. And several teams are mentioned as teams he could go to. The Bulls are the only team that would allow him to start.

    We shall see.

Posts 16 and 33 of this thread link to articles at sports sites.

A relevant quote that says both parties (team and player) are interested:

Richard Hamilton(notes), G, Detroit Pistons: It’s no secret that Hamilton wants out and the Pistons want to grant his wish.

Yeah, the Pistons would flip their shit if there was some way to get rid of Hamilton without paying a buyout. The article doesn't say that the Pistons are willing to PAY a buyout.

Well Professor , I must disagree.

All those guys you mention blow chunks ....and they may as well keep the Rip n Rolla.

The option I was espousing was saving $10M in cash ...yeah sure , no cap space for 2 years but who cares because players would rather shove red hot coals up their arse then sign as a free agent in Detroit ( Charlie , Ben and Chris Wilcox notwithstanding ) .......but the concept was .....

Play the bejeezus out of Greg Monroe as #1 and Rodney Stuckey as #2 with Jonas as the dirty but productive 4 man .....Tayshaun and a protected pick should bring back an asset ( Gerald Wallace? ) and then you go hard for a real point guard in the lottery and build role players around this core with draft picks and cheap grizzled vets that don't have the history with the Pistons that Rip and Tayshaun do
