http://www.nba.com/celtics/news/notes06190...s-comeback.html <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>"Somebody's going to have to take a chance on me, and for the last two years I've been hearing about what I can't do, which is fine, because that drives me with the motivation to prove everybody wrong," Williams said. Known for his speed and explosiveness as a rookie when he averaged 9.5 points and 4.7 assists for the Chicago Bulls, Williams is now redefining his game as he attempts to prove himself to NBA personnel. And he knows that even if he is able to make a comeback, he may not be the same guy he was as an NBA rookie. "I'm going to be a guy who's going to try to get my nine or 10 assists a game, get guys the ball in the right situation, and be a coach on the floor," said Williams. "Only being 24, I feel like I play like a 30-year old. The game is a lot slower to me. I know what I can do; I can pass the ball, knock down open jump shots and create when I have to." Williams was one of 17 free agents who played in 16-minute games (consisting of two eight-minute halves) Monday morning, as the Celtics look to assemble a team for the Vegas Summer League in July. According to Rivers, of the players in attendance, at least a few of them have a shot at potentially making the team next season. Rivers wasn't naming names, but he did weigh in on Williams and his comeback bid. "He played pretty well, he played in spurts. You can see, [he's] a little rusty. But you can also see that he plays with his mind far more than he did before," said Rivers. "His athleticism is no longer where it once was, but his feel [for the game] is off the charts, you can see that. He can run the pick and roll at half speed if he wanted to. He's quicker than that, but if he did, he could still score or get a score for someone." Williams wouldn't mind trying to set up Paul Pierce next season. "Playing alongside Paul Pierce would be a dream come true. I played with him in the World Games and we had a phenomenal time playing together," said Williams.</div> Sounds like he's more into making plays for his teammates rather than himself - GREAT, that's exactly what everyone is looking for. He plays more level-headed, which is a plus because that's what we need (we get way too out of hand with turnovers some times and need a slow-down). Doc said he played pretty well and he said he loved his feel for the game (SAME THING HE SAID ABOUT GOMES before draft day), and he also said he's great with the pick and roll. From the way it sounded from Jay's comments and Doc's comments, and the fact he played well with Pierce previously, I think he's DEFINTELY on the list when Doc said a few have a shot at making the team next season. I hope it's Jay Will.
yeah he sounds like a great guy and if he enjoys playing with Pierce then damn, that might be our PG problem answered right there. He's definately a liability, we have no clue if this guy's going to play 5 games and be out for the rest of the season. If he's still around well after the draft and we still don't have a nice PG option. I'd say deff sign him...knowing Danny Ainge he'll probably pass and sign some white guy who sucks for a semi-big contract.
LOL. Skin color has nothing to do with it. But the fact of the matter is, if Ainge really likes him and thinks he will contribute, then he will make a run at him. I know he has worked out in Philly, New Jersey, Toronto, now Boston, and maybe other places, but not all of them will make a run at him. I think we have a shot at him if we want him.
I don't think we need him. I'd probably rather go with Marcus Williams, Jay will never be starting caliber IMO.

I dont recall anyone saying he has to start. He can become a solid bench player. Thats what the C's are really focusing on, adding depth.

Just bc we have a solid pg in Delonte doesn't mean he doesn't need a back-up you idiot. Just bc someone is starting caliber doesn't mean they have to start.<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (KhAoS-CelticsFahLyfe @ Jun 19 2006, 09:39 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>thats y u pick up jay williams for depth, hes 24 last time i checked.u dont draft backups lotto</div>you keep saying that, but what other choice do we have? Any player we could possibly pick would be a back-up.
I think Jay Williams would be perfect for the C's. He won't command(by play or mouth) a starting role and would be an above average backup once he got up to speed. I would love to see the C's take Roy if available and move Wally, they really need to either commit to rebuilding or trying to win now, you can't have both. Wally and Raef have got to go, and they have to get their young guys tons of pt.

Guys, theres no doubt the guy has been impressive despite everything in workouts, but you need to evaluate our team's position before saying we should get this guy. We've got Delonte West, Dan Dickau, and Orien Greene, allbeit Dickau and Greene suck, but the point is, that we have 3 point guards, AND the 7th pick where we are taking a LONG look at PGs Marcus Williams and Randy Foye. Also we are looking at attempting to sign Speedy Claxton. You tell me where Williams comes in.
