I’m sending out this shout out to my old friend Electric Slim who may stop by, if only to contribute to this thread.
Slim sent me a message many moons ago regarding recommendations for psychedelic music and I think my answer was somewhat inadequate, so I will expand here.

Frankly, most psychedelic music is crap.

There is a good deal of good stuff but not a lot of truly hidden gems. To me, psychedelic music, in its purest form, is that frothy pink, waves of sound music best exemplified by bands like Love. Early (acoustic and electric) Donovan comes to mind. Early Byrds – maybe, like Dylan’s Mr. Tambourine Man, but definitely Eight Miles High. A lot of the one hit psychedelic music is captured on the Nuggets compilations, although not all of it is “psychedelic” (Green Tambourine by The Lemon Pipers, yes. Dirty Water by The Standells, no). An awful lot of the music they were mining was one hit wonders and justifiably so or great bands (The Seeds) who were great and underrated but not "psychedelic." You also have bands like The Charlatans who were connected to the San Francisco scene but weren't really psychedelic. Quicksilver Messenger Service? Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

You have your stuff like Ted Nugent and the Amboy Duke’s Journey to the Center of Your Mind, The Beatles Tomorrow Never Knows and George’s sitar experiments (like Within You/Without You which was much iimproved, IMO in the Cirque de Soliel Love version), The Rolling Stones She’s a Rainbow, etc.
To me, psychedelic music crossed into two different paths. First there was the Acid Rock movement, including The Doors and later early Black Sabbath and Blue Oyster Cult, Hawkwind and to an extent a lot of Pink Floyd (although they crossed both paths, with Syd Barrett and some of their acoustic work more fitting into what I consider "psychedelic" and other downer,“heavy music.” Believe me, I have no doubt a lot of acid was being dropped at Nazz, Deep Purple and Humble Pie concerts.
Then you had the head trip music that sort of turned into jazz fusion and other forms that were loose and improvisational. Check out Grateful Dead Live/Dead for the Dark Star/St. Stephen/The Eleven/Turn On Your Lovelight, Wake of the Flood, Blues for Allah, 8/27/72, 5/26/73, 6/10/73. The 75 concert released as One From the Vault, 5/8/77, 5/9/77 and the 10/78 shows known as “From Egypt With Love.”
I’ve posted plenty of fusion, like Soft Machine, Weather Report and Mahavishnu Orchestra as well as heavy doses of Santana and more current jam bands.

Bands like Flaming Lips, Happy Mondays, Legendary Pink Dots, Teardrop Explodes and hippie freaks like Devendra Banhart are more recent psychedelic bands, but you know that. If you like Banhart, check out old Fairport Convention and psychedelic or not, I can never recommend Van Morrison enough (try In the Garden for something close to on point).

I’ve also posted a lot of Electronica and ambient music, which is the tech age equivalent of psychedelic music – Brian Eno, The Orb, Deep Forest, Harold Budd, et al.
Look forward to your more metal and punk contributions.

Most of the pop music of the 1960s was of the psychedelic variety, IMO. Some of the later drug induced Beatles stuff was of the acid rock variety. Perhaps some of the early progressive rock music as well - yes, zeppelin, etc.

I found the Stones to be plain ol' rock and roll for the most part.

I don't know. I think until the mid 60's it was 3 Beatles tunes and someone like Englebert Humberdink or Sammy Davis at the top of the charts. The Beatles definitely had some psychedelic songs, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, etc. The Stones were flat out rock and roll, except for their attempts at psychedelic music, like 2,000 Light Years from Home. The Kinks too, with songs like See My Friends. There were lesser known bands like Fever Tree and folksy guys like Scott McKinsey, Arlo Guthrie, Barry McGuire. Besides San Fran (Dead, Airplane, Santana, Big Brother) and LA (Byrds, Mama's and Papas, The Doors, The Mothers), Austin (13th Floor Elevators) had a bit of a psychedelic scene. Atlanta/Macon had the Allman Brothers Band. New York had the Velvet Underground. Detroit had more of a proto-punk scene with the MC5 and The Stooges. Chicago seemed more into developing progressive horn bands like The Ides of March and Chicago Transit Authority.

Most of the other regional scenes had some one hit wonders covered by the Nuggets compilations, psychedelic or not. A Lot of that stuff is more garage band than trippy.

And of course every band went through the "hanging out with Ravi Shankar" stage. Party on. Excellent.

It seems that I keep getting emails every time anyone responds to this post. This doesn't happen with any of the other threads I respond to. No offense, by I really don't care who's listening to what (though I'm glad others seem to care). How do I get the emails to stop?
