The Grizzlies will be an ELITE club??? Am I missing something?

From SI on the Blazers/bobcats deal.

The Thunder are the only team you can peg right now as a sure-fire elite club in 2013 and 2014. The Grizzlies have a chance to join that club, but it’s too soon to put them there yet. That’s not to say the Western Conference is there for the taking; but if the Blazers get one or two big moves right — drafts, trades — over the next couple of years, particularly at point guard, this team could do damage. It’ll push 50 wins, draw big crowds and maybe make some noise in the playoffs.

Has the world gone mad? Zach and Gay are gonna make the grizz elite? i feel like im in the twilight zone after reading that. Zach is another Kvin love stat padder and will likely be out of the league for some kind of crazy crime involving a prostitute at some point. lol... but seriously ELITE?

The Grizzlies could become a good team, although I think they'll need a better anchor than Zach.

They're doing really good this year.

Too bad we got nothing for all-star Zach, but at least we can say that we turned what we got into something. Let's see, what was it...

more likely they're a lottery team in 2013 because they aren't going to be able to pay both zebo and gasol

First of all a team with Zach will never be called elite for his defense alone. Second the grizz beat lots of bad teams during their little run here. Will they make the playoffs? Maybe but elite? That is just amusing.

The Grizz are on a nice run but they are in no way elite. They are a team that can score but defensively they are not even average. ZBO anchors there offense and "defense" and they lose him after this season.

    Blazers - sucked with Zach

    Knicks - sucked with Zach

    Clippers - sucked with Zach

Now the grizz are elite with Zach? Gotta be missing something here.

This is nonsense, and unsupportable by facts.

Zach is the most effective offensive player in the franchise's history.

With a halfway decent coach and a less ego-driven complement of players he would have brought us a title.

I expect the Teddy Bears to trade Gay eventually as he is the boot that keeps them at the curb.

Without making any moves, we already are regularly getting 50 wins, drawing big crowds (2nd in the NBA in attendance, limited only by arena size), etc. WTF was that writer thinking?

remind me what the Knicks and Clips got back when they traded/rid themselves of him? Of course the reason Portland jettisoned Zach had everything to do with repeated off court issues and lying to management, but lets just skim over that and put on our 20/20 hindsight googles. Right about now I'd rather have Frye then Randolph but I am glad the club has Rudy

Zach's career spans almost a decade now. If he's so great why hasn't he ever been a starter on a team that finished the year with a winning record let alone made the playoffs?

Zach will be with Memphis next year. They will make the playoffs this year. They will be not elite, but a playoff team with Zach the best player.

None of the past changes the fact that he's the best player on a playoff team. We waited on a couple of other players for years--the wrong players. This was the one worth waiting for, the one who actually became something.

Call me crazy, but looks as if we've done just fine without "waiting" for Zach's brain to start functioning.

I understand players being confident, but that is crazy talk. Mayo shoots under 36% from 3, and this year Ray is shooting almost 46%.

Mayo has impressive 3%'s for his career though.

Even if you give him that (which is a stretch), the rest is just pure bat shit crazy.

Someone should have killed Hitler when he was 7. What a joke. Can't believe everyone just sat around and let him get older when they easily could have killed him as a child.

What does your avatar mean? You're saying sarcastically that your opponents are up in the clouds?

I know it's something full of biting irony.

This is pretty funny stuff. The Grizz organization will not be a successful one because they are cheap, and that is not going to change. It won't matter if they have a great team, because nobody buys tickets in that town. As a result their revenue is going to suck, in addition it isn't like they are ever going to get a national spotlight. Look at the Spurs, they are one of the best organizations in all of sports. Well managed, coached, and the talent on the court is simply amazing. All of that said they still are not a nationally recognized team for a few reasons. First off there are three teams in Texas which doesn't allow you the regional foundation to be a national power. Secondly the national media will certainly give respect to the Spurs, but just look at the blowjob it gives to the Knicks, Lakers, Miami compared to that of the team that might be the best in the NBA which is the Spurs.

It is laughable to says the Thunder are on that level as well, they have Durant and Westbrook. That is pretty much going to be the only players they ever have. They will not be able to get FA's to come, nor will they be able to sign a 3rd option to play along side those two for the long term. If you do not believe me, see Jeff Green trade.

If you are going to win as a small market team you have to have an amazing organization like the Spurs from top to bottom. You have to be willing to spend(lose) money in most cases, which means overpaying for FA's, signing drafted players to extensions often above value, and be able to find those diamond in the rough type players. The Thunder are close on some of those things, the Grizz are not.
