Will he be the point guard for the future for us? A lot of people don't think so in Boston. I've been hearing fans call up WEEI and rank on him. Saying he doesn't know how to run an offense and his decision making isn't that good at the point. That stuff will come with experience playing the point guard. He was a 2 in college and last year was his first season playing point guard all year long. I think he definately has the chance to be a good point guard. A lot of people want him out just because he didn't do amazing in his first season. He put up 11/4/4 as a starter and I think that's decent numbers for a point guard. He's definately too small to play the 2 and he would get dumped on with some of the great shooting guards in this league. What do you guys think about Delonte? Also on a random site note, he was on Dale & Holley this afternoon, I was listening to it on my lunch break. By the way, Dale & Holley is a sports talk show on WEEI in Boston, with Dale Arnold and Michael Holley. Delonte was in Washington D.C. with a group of students from Dorchester high school, he is really committed to helping out the Boston community, which is awesome if you're a real fan and understand that these type of players are on your favorite team. Anyway, Delonte had some priceless quotes, he was talking about how he names some of his jump shots "cereal" and "cookies". He said "cookies" was when someone is guarding you and they don't believe you have a good jump shot and you can just shoot it in the defender's face all night long. He said it was like "stealing cookies". Then "cereal" is when you have a little guy guarding you and you can just post up on him and the person you're scoring on needs some cereal because he's getting worked. Delonte is quite the character.
I think he's more of a combo guard, but there is no question in my mind that he can run a team. He's a smart player and a natural leader, he can run the team at pg. I think he would be great as a part of a duel-pg backcourt, with say, Marcus Williams. It takes alot of pressure off of both players, and it can make for more fast break opportunities, seeing as more ppl can handle the ball.
I like Williams's game but that whole scandal at UConn everyone seems just to forget about. If we draft him I hope he's an ok kid, we don't need bad character guys at such a crucial part in this team's development. Anyway, I agree, if we do get Williams, him and West could be great playing together.
Delonte is a quiet leader, and a very solid all around contributor to this team, and I CAN see them succeeding with him at the point.
Stop saying "us". Also, since he is the current starter, i c him leading the Celts for many seasons to come. The only way he'll be gone is if they find a great trade or if he wants to elave.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Stop saying "us".</div>It's my favorite team from the city I was born in, I pay them money to see their games, I'll call them whatever the hell I want to call them.

I think its fine to call your team "us" and "we", if you legit love the team. I grew up loving this team, go to many games, and have a strong connection with them. I watched nearly every game last year (with the exception of 2 on Friday nights where I played tournaments, and a few West Coast games I fell asleep for). Especially with a bad team, I think that qualifies as being a ridiculously dedicated fan, and like welcome to the jungle said, we can call them whatever the hell we want. Back to West though.. I was thinking last night, and despite him being more of a combo-guard, he's still at a young and learning stage in his career. If he makes half as much progress as he did last year, he will improve so much as a PG and leader that it's ridiculous. This kid has the right demeanor and the perfect level head to succeed in this league, and last year he was a joy to watch play basketball.Heres to hoping he raises his level of play to an even higher status!

Sham's comment pissed me off, it's annoying when people try to pick little things that you can and can't say about your favorite team. Sham, is there some rule book about being a fan that I need to pick up?
I think people get carried away with the "true PG" label sometimes, and there is no doubt in my mind Delonte can be the PG of the future. I mean don't get me wrong, I love playmakers, and we need one on this team. But that doesn't necessarily mean Delonte can't play the point, or that Delonte isn't our future. Sure, he is a natural 2-guard and played SG in college, but his ability to transition was easier on him than most guys (SG to PG) because for one he has the skills and vision, and two because in our offense he doesn't have to be dominant with the ball. Some guys have it tough and their coach demands playmaking ability right from the get-go and has him run the play, while being dominant with the ball, and having him set up the guy for the shot. Delonte doesn't need to do that to be an affective PG because of Doc's offense and the fact that we have Paul/Wally. Delonte can make a nice backdoor feed or cut, he can make the entry pass, or he can clear a way for Pierce off the dribble/drive. He also can pop back, and with that "natural SG" inside him, with that smooth jumper, he can score off the same play he started. Delonte runs the plays fairly well in my opinion, and just because he doesn't always end the play with an assist on the stat sheet, he starts the plays. He is a good player and can basically do anything you ask him to do. See, that's what makes him so valuable. He can do so many different things and can start and finish a play. He can play as a role player and he can also step in as a scorer, and not to mention his extra hustle and intangibles. I have no problem with Delonte being our future PG, but we do need another PG to at least back him up, veteran or rookie.
I'm undecided on Delonte. He's showed that he can run the point fairly well, but hasn't shown the ability to make enough plays to win games. A great PG makes everyone around him better. Delonte doesn't do that...yet. He might in the future, but if he doesn't show more progress next season I think his role will be a backup PG and energy player. I love his hustle.

But, I do agree his playmaking needs to improve. But you can't blame Delonte, he is a natural SG being groomed into an NBA PG. He has the skills to play the point, and I think he will improve in all aspects of his game.
