Throwing out names, we should look at for the MLE and upgrade our team. Bonzi Wells and Jared Jefferies are two names I'd like to see Mavs pursue and try to sign. I don't expect either to get more then the MLE. The only guys I would sign on our team would be obviously Terry(bird rights), Powell(LLE), and DA(vet). DA only because of the influence he has on the team and how he serves as a player coach for the team. Powell because of the open spot behind Dirk at pf that will be needed to be filled. I can see one of our draft picks platooning with Powell as well. Terry, no comments needed to be said. He has to resign. Griff, Rawle, Benga are guys I'm not looking at signing up quickly, I think we can look at better options as all 3 are in most cases 3rd string players. Not dissing Griff with that statement, but he's not getting any younger and I think as I stated above, Jefferies and Wells I like more. Discuss any other free agency possibilitiesCan someone pin this topic?
I somehow don't see us being able to sign Wells for the MLE. Some idiot team's going to pay him more for his series against San Antone. And I don't really like Wells much - just seems like another guy who won't hit the open 3 after Dirk dishes it to him. He seems like a pick-up on the defensive end, but is this guy going to accept the bench like Stack or is he going to complain?Terry we should be able to sign with the E Bird exception, and Powell and DA will be pretty easy to sign. Griff I actually like for this team, but I haven't seen Jeffries play much. I'm a bit worried to get Jeffries though because does this team really need another young role player? I'd like a veteran who's been there before, but then again, I guess that's pretty much everyone after these finals so Jeffries wouldn't hurt too much. I really want a guard who can shoot the 3 and either slash or play D.
SG who can hit the 3 at a high percentage and is decent at everything else or a PF that can guard Amare decently and be less of a liability on offense compared to Diop.
We really need a center with some offensive ability. The obvious option might be a trade for Magloire, but I think Diop would still start over him. If Diop can learn how to score in the post, it'll open up the lane for Harris and Howard to slash. Is there a center who can score in this pool?
I don't think center should be looked at as a hole, we have 4 centers if Benga resigns. That's enough. Despite their offensive defiencies, not many other centers have great o games. <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>SG who can hit the 3 at a high percentage and is decent at everything else or a PF that can guard Amare decently and be less of a liability on offense compared to Diop.</div> Add to that, a defender for the likes of Kobe, Wade, Gino, not a shut down defender but someone to give them problems. We've struggled against the elite sgs. Again, Jared Jefferies would be nice for that role, another guy I like is Quinton Ross, but he would have to be a trade. I don't think draft wise, there's anybody like that. Man did we F*ck up not going after Bell hard last year.
Yeah I agree. Bell would be the perfect shooting guard for our team. Dallas wouldn't have problems with teams packing it in on defense and that would make Dallas even more dangerous on offense along with Wade not going off for 40 every night.
We had Bell a few years ago and he didn't do crap (for Nellie, I'll admit), but I'm starting to warm up to Jeffries. He's certainly big enough to handle just about anybody, but I don't know how quick he is.I think a shooter is something we should try to address in the draft if we can, but if we can't, we might as well just try to resign Van Horn at a reasonable amount and wait for Harris and Howard to mature into their roles.
A reasonable amount for Van Horn is LLE. He was awful in this years playoffs. He had plenty of time to get his game together and it never happened for him. I hope we go after someone else because Van Horn was worthless this year. Josh Powell at center would be a nice player to go small with. After this years playoffs I don't know what Van Horn would be good for except to play 12 minutes a game and give Dirk a rest.
I just want him for the regular season to cut down Dirk's minutes. I think if Avery puts him in in the postseason again then he should be fired. Okay, not really, but Van Horn sucked. If he'll actually hit his threes next season I'll be happy, but we all know that won't happen. I just think we should roll him out for 20 minutes a night versus the Knicks and Portland and all them, just to give Dirk a break and to see if he can't get his shot down.I've only seen Powell play a little bit but my friend has seen him play several times and really likes him. How is Powell?
Powell is very athletic and is strong. He tends to make shots when things are going well but can't score when things are going bad and probably needs to be yanked out when that happens. Kinda like Marquis Daniels. He is good defensively and a perfect player to put on Amare Stoudemire along with Diop. He is 6'10 and plays a lot like Haslem.
A Haslem player would be perfect to back-up Dirk. We don't need instant offense when Dirk comes out, just a tougher player to shake the other PF up.Terry made 7 million this year and wants to stay. How much do you think it takes to keep him and resign Howard? I think we should be able to do it and still use the salary we gain from the other players we let go to sign one more free agent. What about Pavel Podkolzin? He's been here two years yet I still don't know anything about him.

As for Howard, we should be able to extend him this summer and not have to worry about signing him when he becomes a free agent. And Terry, we have his rights, so we can match any offer. I say 5 year, around 50-60 mil is the highest I would go. Other then that, later. I'm pretty much against resigning Van Horn unless he's going to sign for the minimum. He's not worth using our exceptions. I still say Powell and a draft pick are good enough to play behind Dirk. If Dirk goes down, were going down. Even if Van Horn was backup. <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>What about Pavel Podkolzin? He's been here two years yet I still don't know anything about him.</div> We drafted him for his potential. He's a 7'5 center who has a offensive game. Not only that, he's not a twig like Shawn Bradley and can body up big guys downlow. He should get some look this year though and I'm confident that we made the right decision in drafting him as a project. It's a low risk, high reward acquisition. <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>We had Bell a few years ago and he didn't do crap (for Nellie, I'll admit), but I'm starting to warm up to Jeffries.</div>Bell was great for Nellie, he was one of the key members of the Glue Crew when we went to the WCF. We let him go because of our draft(Howard, Daniels). Big mistake as he would have come cheap, not only did he improve his jumper with Utah, but he's still has the intensity and attitude on the defensive end that he had with us. He's only improving, shame we let him go. But yea I'm high on Jefferies but I think he's like Michael Redd, in that Wiz will match any offer(he's restricted). I read some comments about the DMN, and they said they were hints about Daniels being shopped, I'm for it as long as we get a good player. But Daniels showed something in the last game, I'm just getting tired of it being every so far and between.
I think Daniels is definitely going, probably for a shooter or maybe a back-up PG.What I meant was we could use one of our exceptions to sign another player. Cuban will do that as long as we're not picking up too much salary when we resign Terry and extend Howard after getting rid of Van Horn and a few others. If Dirk goes down we're screwed, but only if he's out for the playoffs. Our team is good enough without him to still make the playoffs, or at least keep the boat afloat until he comes back.
I hate to say it, but Marquis is leaving, I really like him, but Avery just cant find anywhere to play him for the minutes that he needs.

Our most prized possession with that has been Daniels. And that answers Zards question. Daniels signed a 5 or 6 year deal last year for the MLE. So he's locked up to a reasonable deal. It sucks that no one signs with us, but only having the MLE will do that.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Zards @ Jun 22 2006, 08:54 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>Just a quick question guys, but is Daniels a free agent?</div>No, he's basically on the trading block because Avery never plays him and he would be great to pick up a player we could really use. Seems like Marquis was used mostly as the third string PG these playoffs, and that's just not right. It either needs to change or he needs to go, probably the latter sadly.I'm with Rok. Screw Van Horn, and it sucks we lost Bell. He was good with Nellie, just not one of the bigger players.

Good to hear.
I say trade Daniels and KVH, forget our FAs We got Ager to take Griffins spot and we can get Pittsnogle and Pops for a back up PF. Sign DA as a assistant Coach. Sign James' to 5 years like he wants. We've lost out on too many good Players but if the General really thinks Mo Ager's ready to play I say look @ other Free Agents
Yea with Ager and possibly James in, that would mean Griff/DA go bye bye. Van Horn is not expected back and there's a good chance Rawle too. So we could add Pops and Pittsnogle. Pops said he's more of a 3 as well. I don't know where Daniels fits, and what we get for him.
