Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan had been curious to see how some of his young pitchers would handle pitching to veteran major league hitters who were rounding into form.

Some of them handled the added responsibility better than some others today as Cardinals hurlers walked 14 in a 7-4 exhibition loss to the Detroit Tigers.

Starter Lance Lynn, who had an outside shot at landing a rotation job, walked two and ran up 51 pitches in two innings. The Tigers scored two first-inning runs with the help of the wind.

Fellow rookie Joe Kelly allowed a wind-abetted homer to Miguel Cabrera in a three-run third inning and also walked five, besides throwing a wild pitch.

Rookie Blake King allowed a run in the sixth although he struck out three, including Magglio Ordonez. But rookie Maikel Claito passed three more in two innings, giving up a run. And rookie Adam Reifer issued two more walks in the ninth although neither scored.
