The general scene: Offensive line is one of the most underrated positions on a team, maybe the most underrated. Year after year, the teams with the most experienced, veteran OL winds up at the top of the polls. Just look at Auburn last year or Alabama the year before — both had veteran lines with tons of starts together.

The Crimson Tide will have similar experience along the front this season, with four of five starters returning and a boatload of experienced depth behind them. The only losses at OL for Alabama were starter James Carpenter and backups Brian Motley and David Ross. All three were solid players last season, especially Carpenter, who was a two-year starter at left tackle.

Despite the number of returning starters, success isn’t necessarily set in stone. All four returning starters were relatively young and inexperienced last season, and it showed at times. The Tide struggled to run the ball in some games, and quarterback Greg McElroy was pressured much more than the previous season.
