U.S. national team forward Charlie Davies made a triumphant return to American soccer last night, scoring two goals in D.C. United's 3-1 victory over the Crew in RFK Stadium.

The successful Major League Soccer debut of one of the most promising of American players after a near-fatal car accident in 2009 was "like a fairy tale," Davies said.

"Beating Spain in the Confederations Cup, scoring against Egypt, scoring in Azteca Stadium - those are all fantastic moments," the 24-year-old New Hampshire native said. "But this was the best moment of my life. It's a no-brainer."

A crowd of 18,132 was hungry for something to cheer about after a horrendous 6-20-4 season in 2010, and Davies was definitely something.

The fans' jubilation came at the expense of a disjointed and sluggish Crew, which slogged its way through the MLS season opener while starting five players new to the team.

Phenomenal return for Davies. First he nailed the penalty, then put a move on Chad Marshall to make him fall over before dribbling around Hesmer and slotting the ball home to make it 2 for him. Its early yet, but its looking like this was a great move for him and he'll be heading back to Europe and the USMNT in no time.
