Either way, he would still have trouble guarding players who are alot taller, let alone shutting them down.
Yeah, I was actually about to say Joey Dumars, but then KMart mentioned him already. (argh) He wasnt a great lockdown defender, but he did bring 100% effort on D that hassled superstars like MJ, during the mini rivalry that the Bulls and Pistons had in the early '90s. That whole Bad Boys Pistons team played rough and dirty inside the paint. Did anyone say Dennis Johnson already? That guy shut down Magic Johnson in 1984 in the NBA Finals, I believe. He was always a hard-nosed defender, and often went unnoticed on that loaded Celtics squad in the '80s.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (KMart @ Jun 24 2006, 04:08 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>Has anyone mentioned Joe Dumars?</div>I was watching an interview, and Michael Jordan said that Dumars played defense on him better than anyone, because of him knowing how to do direct players to go the way he wants them go. He was great at shading everyone he defended towards Rodman and Laimbeer, much like Prince does these days trying to run his players into the Wallaces. When Jordan says that someone played him tough on D, you know that guy was a good defensive player.<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Heatfan32 @ Jun 25 2006, 12:05 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>Which is why his defense sucks, he plays the passing lane rather then trying to stay with his man.</div>I completely agree, i don't put much merit into steals for telling why someone is a good defensive player. Like you said, steals usually mean that you play the passing lanes, which can hurt if you gamble and dont get the ball. The other reason why i dont, is because there are alot of the steals that they got the credit for, and someone else created. There are alot of times where someone will get a hand on the ball and deflect the pass, but someone else runs it down after the deflection and gets credit for the steal.
I'm baffled that barely anyone has mentioned Joe Dumars. Everyone is saying the best defenders were MJ, Pippen, Rodman, Hakeem... However, Joe Dumars is right up there. If MJ said he played tough defense, he played tough defense. Come on guys

Sorry to be the party pooper but this has to be said:Stop making all these topics about "best ____ in NBA history" when 90% of the people here are 14-18, maybe a couple guys 19-early 20's. Nobody has seen most of the "great ones" so how can you possibly compare the 2?Sorry, but this is bugging me, people arguing things when they weren't even alive to see them play.

I have never seen Dumars play so honestly I have no idea how good he was defensively. I mean from what ive heard he was a great defender but im not gonna put someone if ive never seen them play before. Im gonna put the people that I have seen play great defense.
