    So I'm geting my kindle tomorrow.
    Want to keep up more on world affairs......

    which is the recommended paper.

    1. NY Times
    2. WSJ
    3. FT
    4. ????

    leaning towards the Financial times...maybe the NY times....don't want TOO much biz shit.... Get the LA times and NY Post at work.

    Fucking Times is charging now for online content. It hasn't worked twice now, but they just keep on trying.

    I'm interested as well. When traveling, I always like FT over WSJ, but it seemed expensive.

    Though now that I'm riding public transit 2 hours a day, maybe I'll go back to reading more of the "paper."

    I read on a blog that the Oregonian transfers over to Kindle very poorly.

    I think the Washington Post is a terrific paper, as is the NYT. If I'm looking for features and analysis, however, I'm all about The Economist.

    WSJ. You can get the WaPo/NYT information by watching a major network's evening news. It's all the same.

    I used to read the economist and it really kept me up. Hated Time and Newsweek, felt stupid reading their dumbed down articles.

    I might subscribe to that. Its easier to read in print format though IMO. newspapers i hate because they are so long and big to read.

    The best newspaper I ever subcribed to was the Economist.

    It doesn't focus as much on business as you might think. And their world news is excellent, since you mentioned World Affairs.

    Since you already get the LA Times and the NY Post, I don't think you need another daily, even though the NY Times and Washington Post are superior. WSJ used to be excellent. Anybody have an opinion on the Murdoc'd version. So sad.

    economist is a magazine though but its in depth. gotta rush to read through it.

    I like the gossip-rag nature of the Post. LA times kind of blows but its kind of local.

    started reading the FT...its ok so far. articles seem short.

    El Prez, what made you choose a Kindle over the other options? The wife and I are thinking of getting a nook (b&w, wifi only) before we head over to Spain next week. We didn't do too much research before hand though, so I'm not sure if one is that much better or worse than the other. Any pros/cons would be helpful.

    IMO, (and in no particular order)

    Kindle's more widely supported, there are a lot of ways to get material on it (and free online storage if you somehow go over the 3500-volume capacity), free whispernet downloads, email, clunky-but-free wifi, a month of battery life b/w charges and I'm pretty sure Amazon's not going out of business anytime soon. I also sync it up with my iPhone, though I don't know if nook has that capability or not. With the new sharing feature coming out (maybe already out? I haven't used it yet) it really, imho, removes the one big plus Nook had over it, which was the lending capability. Even the pricing's about the same.

    Now if you want to discuss Kindle vs. iPad or something, that's another ball of wax that I can't really discuss. But I think Kindle beats nook. And I've put my money where my mouth is twice (one for me, one for Mrs. FromWA) and am debating the DX one when this eventually dies. It's been on 4 continents with me and is showing some signs of wear and tear. But if/when I get the new one, all my old stuff will be transferred over for free!

    I love my Kindle. Fantastic piece of technology that does one thing and does it really, really well. The Nook is good too - I just prefer buying at Amazon over B&N. Tablets (iPad, Xoom) are great for what they are - but I prefer reading on an e-ink screen than a reflective one.

    When the revolution comes and we are all subjects of our tree overlords - anyone that does not have one will be the first with their back against the wall.

    Thanks! Nook also has iphone/ipad/android apps, so that is a wash, but it's good to hear from someone that has used it. In just reviewing specs, the fact that the nook supports epub, while the kindle doesn't. Has that caused any issues for you, or is it a non factor?

    Initially we were going to get the nook color, but we want one with e-ink which is why we're debating between the B&W nook and the kindle. So that's 2 for kindle, 0 for nook so far.

    I have no clue what ePub does or does not do - I did not see any content that I could not get on a Kindle. FWIW - PDF viewing works for me on the Kindle - if you can't get it in Kindle's native format - I suspect you will be able to find it in PDF format.

    I do 90% of my online shopping on amazon. Makes payment easier plus I already have a dozen or so books.

    Same. With my work I read a ton of pdf and powerpoint slides, and have not had any problems, other than a couple of things I needed to reformat b/c the font was too small. If I was a tech at Amazon, being able to resize pdf's would be one of the upgrades I'd work on for Kindle 5000.
