Is ANYTHING more boringly predictable than Warriors announcers?

    1. Had Bowie not been so unfortunate to get injured, the Blazers would have several more titles and Jordan might never have gotten a single ring or even remained a Bull.

    2. Quick, name someone who owns a major league sports team that isn't rich.

    3. WTF? Girls playing basketball?

I guess that's technically correct, since MIXUM is banned at the moment.

as a longtime Bay Area resident I can attest that their duo is just the pits. They are completely over the top homers to the point they make Mike and Mike comparatively sound as if they're rooting against the Blazers. When they get an initial observation wrong and then the replay reveals this in slo-mo, they stick by their initial call. They're not funny or insightful but for some reason are incredibly smug. When they're calling a game, I turn the sound off and listen to music instead of being tempted to throw something at the TV

Bob Fitzgerald (play by play guy) is fucking AWFUL. Hes 100% of the smugness and always making excuses for the pathetic ass team out there. Blows minor Warriors feats out of proportion and sort of epitomizes what is wrong with the W's ownership (perhaps new ownership will be different). Jim Barnett who does the color is insightful and enjoyable to listen to. Hes a bit of a homer but he'll also call guys out when they make a shitty play, though still not often enough.

I was surprised how good the PDX guys are when listening to the stream the other night though. I've found that most TV guys are fucking terrible. Homers, uninsightful, uninteresting, not funny, not good at what they do really at all, no redeeming qualities at all. PDX play by play guy was pretty decent and the token "old guy who preaches the fundamentals of bball" doing the color wasn't absolutely terrible. By NBA standards that is above average.

You should hear the Utah and Sac TV guys. Its like they live on totally different planets from the rest of the world.

Barnett was on the first Trailblazer team and scored the first bucket in franchise history. Beloved Blazer broadcaster Bill Schonely is supposed to have first made his catch phrase "Rip City!" following one of his shots. I suspect that something must have gone wrong with how his Blazer career went/ended, as instead of having a warm spot towards his former team, he eagerly piles on with negative gossip/innuendo in every single Blazer-Warrior matchup where I've listened to him over the years.

The worst example of this was the game which ended with the Bonzi Wells-Chris Mills dustup and a near riot in Oakland. Replays show Warrior fans raining drinks, throwing trash, and one woman spitting repeatedly on Blazer players entering the tunnel following their last second victory... all with Barnett going on and on with what terrible people the Trailblazers are. One full drink then clearly hits Rasheed (who'd hit the game winner) in the face, and he goes into the stands to confront the fan. Security is on it and the fan is arrested... Barnett is even higher on his horse saying this is unprovoked and Wallace should be arrested.

to land the job initially Fitz undercut his mentor (quality play by play voice Greg Papa) a year after Cohan bought the team. Reportedly he came in at less then half the rate. He's an empty paint by numbers shill as a broadcaster. He's been their TV voice for 17 years now yet I've never heard a Warriors fan speak well of him. I occasionally have dropped by W's forums and seen posters with names like Fire Fitz NOW

Hopefully both are let go as new ownership puts their stamp on the team in their first full off season.

    I'd agree with all that

I've the league pass too... those guys are all pretty over the top homers. Jazz announcer Hot Rod Hundley takes it to a level that is entertaining for me at least. My favorite announcers in the league are the Clipper duo

especially with Miller, the Giants broadcasters are a cut above. I'd put them on par with Schonely in his prime as I just like to listen to them. I don't even like baseball that much but they make the experience better.

I lived in DC when Jon Miller was the Orioles' announcer (before the Nationals). He was incredible. People in the mid-Atlantic still can't figure out why the O's dumped him.

Having NBA League Pass, I also agree Mike & Mike are among the best. Of course they root for the team but they are honest. If the Blazers miss a defensive assignment or blow a layup they don't make excuses and when a replay shows their initial opinion wrong they admit it, even if the home fans are still PO'd. And so far as I can tell they are factually correct. I get so riled up when an announcer states something that is provably false (gee, sounds like a so called news network) with smug smiles, not bothering to check facts.

And BTW no one "lets" women play basketball. This is 2011 and women don't need to ask anyone's permission.

The Celtics broadcast team is easily the worst. Annoying Boston accents and Heinsohn is an idiot.

First, on side issues, HCP, it's not a good idea to confuse your fantasy world with your neighborhood. That's Glenn Beck territory. Especially when your fantasy world is stuck in 1890 or thereabouts. Because while your mind is in some late-Victorian "paradise" the rest of you is in 2011, where Danielle Adams might stomp on your crotch on her way for a layup.

Other side issue, the only person I've seen make a shot from the back was Alvin Williams. Remember? Jazz at Blazers, Williams going for a shot, fouled hard, knocked to the floor, tosses ball at hoop and it went in when he was flat on his back for the and one. Then Chipmunk goes and misses the free throw. Oi vey!

Back to issue at hand. Last night, the TNT crew showed the difference between competent broadcasters and crappy ones. Pointed out problems but also positives about both teams, provided information, I mean I could enjoy watching them.

Interesting information about current Warriors broadcaster low balling a more talented guy - I had not known.

Very good and informative post . . . however I think the only thing that'll stick in my mind by this time tomorrow is that we finally figured out who PapaG is!
