Okay after thinking this over and over about Roy's struggles, I have come to a conclusion. And call me out if you think I'm full of shit. 1.) Roy of old. I remembered him not really "scoring" too much in the first half. Basically waiting for his game to come to him. Of course there are exceptions, but I remembered the majority of his games, he played tentative in the 1st and 2nd and turned it on in the third and fourth quarters. 2.) It's obvious Nate is playing Roy as more of a "role player", in terms of minutes; yet he expects Roy to do the things Roy does before his injury. 3.) There was a comment made about Roy being more of a "James Jones" type of contributor; which maybe the best role for him. If this is true, then why are we using the same old plays for Roy? If he truly doesn't have the "legs" or "explosiveness" of old, then why keep the plays that are catered to this? 4.) Defensively, in this series, Roy isn't playing worse than the other guards defensively, so he is just as much a detriment to the club in this series on defense. So don't you think it's unfair to expect Roy to contribute of Old, when you aren't given him the minutes to establish his game? Why is Nate keeping the old plays for Roy, instead of drawing up new ones that cater to his new physical ability? I think we are only hurting Roy's confidence more because most fans don't know the game, and expect the old Roy to play. This is unfair for the team and Roy. Yes, Roy should be contributing to his "max contract", but anyone with any B-Ball IQ knows that's impossible. Wouldn't it be better to try and get the most out of Roy, instead of exploiting him negatively? I don't say to give Roy a ton of minutes, but if you want the same Roy, then you need to give him a ton of minutes to establish the game. Kinda a catch 22.
It's way too late for that "experiment", inactive list is better choice IMO Lets go with the horses that got us here
Yep and it's actually Nate's fault. They had 20 games to work this out before the playoffs, and instead Nate just assumed Roy would be his old self. Problem is if Nate wanted the old Roy back, then he should have started right out the gate. Yeah less minutes, but as a starter.
however we want to "label" that it's past history, the guy has no confidence and game right now - you simply do not start him, it's not fair to the rest of the team
Maybe it would have been better if Roy just sat this season out then. Maybe that's why other players never come back after surgery this early. I can't remember a single player that tried doing what Roy did this season. I think this decision may have bite him in the ass.
Mags you have to realize his "surgery" was no big deal, they just scoped him to clean up any loose bits and gave him a PRP shot to enhance recovery - that's it. it's adjusting to his now limited condition, it's taking a while and as you said there may be a few folks at fault there, then again maybe this is as good as it gets?
Jason Quick just had an interview on 95.5 that was 19 minutes long....over twice the amount broy played last night.....broy>jasonquick
I don't think some of us are understanding the magnitude of change in Roy's game. He can't just flip a switch and go automatically from being the #1 guy for 3 full seasons to a role-playing shooter.
I limited minutes he was able to produce some nice games earlier this year... you may be right... but I don't think we'll ever know because he has to earn the minutes.
Better not to play at all at this point, as others say it is too late now. And although Nate could have played him more in the regular season, he had other priorities also, like establishing an offense that included Wallace, like trying to get Rudy on track. I think Roy had enough of a chance and if he had shown something he would have got increased minutes. And it's not about whether it is "unfair to expect Roy to contribute of Old"; it's about whether if's fair to us fans to not give the team it's best chance to succeed and for me, right now, that's to let other people play. I'm sorry that Roy hasn't been able to play through his mental blocks but I think that needs to wait until next preseason and season.
Insead of taking his time to contribute, he needs to become Mr. Instant Offense. Nate gives him 4 minutes, he doesn't do anything, so he sits and gets depressed. He doesn't think humbly like a substitute yet. He still thinks the way a King of the team does, like he can leisurely work on his own schedule. He was always slow, so I don't know whether he can quicken up.
I think McMillian should start him this next game and pretty much give him the first quarter. Tell him to go out there and show us what he has left. If he stinks he sit the rest of the series or is very limited in the minutes he plays. Let him man the fuck up or sit his ass down.
Roy's knees have rendered him slow and completely removed any NBA quickness he had. He, literally, lumbers up and down the court. His "one-on-three" moves in the key that had become old and useless are now painfully pathetic. The bottom line is that while he can still shoot the ball, he has no game whatsoever. It's sad, but that's what injuries have done to him. He lives in a state of semi denial and still thinks that at certain times in playoff games he can carry the team. Well, he can't. Frankly, we're a better team when he is not on the floor. But Nate is old school and old school says star players that don't have it anymore will always get to play- even if it means hurting the team.
This season? How about what he did last season, coming back only 8 days after his surgery? I think Roy has hurt himself by rushing back after surgery TWICE. It was a stupid decision both times, and yet the team let him do it. It has probably contributed to his surprising decline.
Because of the failure of Nate to integrate Roy back into the team in the way he needed to be, for the remainder of the playoffs he should be used on a production basis. If he comes in and is shooting well, and getting others involved then let him play a bit. If he comes in and freezes Aldridge out of the offense while trying to go 1 on 5 then yank him ASAP
And don't forget defense. If he isn't quick enough to rotate to the open shooter on the perimeter, then out he goes as well.
When one considers how he has hurt the team, any minutes are too many. But Nate has left him out there well after it's apparent he's hurting the team.
I support this idea. But it's not going to happen. Besides which, to really "get him going", you'd have to give him his old isolation plays back. What is LaMarcus, our CURRENT franchise player doing meanwhile?
