Dream scenario: Having Von Miller or one of the top quarterbacks fall to the 49ers at No. 7 would surely tempt them, but that seems unrealistic even as a dream scenario. A more realistic dream scenario would have the 49ers on the clock with a choice between top cornerbacks Patrick Peterson and Prince Amukamara. The team could then draft the one it likes best, filling an obvious need, or consider trading out of the selection if another team showed strong interest in moving up the board for, say, one of the top wideouts. The 49ers' problems in pass coverage last season were team-related and not just corner-specific. The safety play wasn't exactly stellar. As ESPN Stats & Information notes, the 49ers allowed 66.7 percent completions, 18.2 yards per attempt and a 130.1 rating on passes thrown at least 15 yards downfield between the yard-line numbers -- right where top coverage safeties are expected to make their mark. The league averages were 48.8 percent completions and 12.3 yards per attempt with a 79.9 rating. But with cornerback Nate Clements' contract becoming untenable, there's no denying the team's need for a top corner. Adding one with the seventh overall choice would provide a needed talent upgrade in the secondary. And if Peterson eventually transitioned into becoming a top safety, as former 49ers cornerback Eric Davis suggested the case might be, the 49ers could use him there as well. Ronnie Lott made that transition famously as the eighth pick of the 1981 draft. Plan B: It would probably entail seeking out one of the top pass-rushers after Miller. I've penciled in Robert Quinn as a possibility, but the 49ers would have to weigh risks. Quinn underwent surgery in 2007 to alleviate pressure caused by a benign tumor that remains in Quinn's brain and could affect his status. http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/tag?name=draft-watch-2011-dream-scenarioplan-b-nfc
Deion Sanders said Patrick Peterson will probably end up being a safety because of his size. Peterson weighs in at 215 which was Deion's playing weight after he added 10 pounds out of college.
- Peterson will probably switch to safety. In 10 years. He'll be a cornerback, he's ridiculously agile at his size, it would be dumb to switch him. Amukamara would be more ideal for you guys seeing as how he's better in coverage than Peterson + Peterson will most likely not be there. - Von Miller dropping there at #7 is a pipedream. He'll be gone from 3-6. - Blaine Gabbert COULD drop to you guys. I hope that doesn't happen though, because then it'll mean Peterson will be off the board at the 6 pick.
I'd rather the team trade for or sign a veteran QB (Kolb, Palmer, McNabb etc.) or even tank the season and draft Andrew Luck next year. Frank Gore isn't getting any younger and he's injury prone as is. Why waste time developing another QB at this point? I think the team is good enough to win the division now if they get steady production at QB. If they can't, tank the season and get Luck in next year's draft.
i have von miller to the niners at 7 1.cam 2.dareus 3.gabbert 4.green 5.peterson 6.quinn or julio jones 7.von miller or if the bills take miller, niners get their choice of gabbert/jones/quinn/prince/fairley/etc...
id also rather thie niners trade or sign a qb, my choice is vince young, get him motivated, and win with defense/ball control
The Bills like Newton much more than they like Gabbert. He doesn't fit their system. Vice versa for Cincinnati.
It looks like Arizona (and Fitzgerald) has a huge hard-on for Kolb. And you guys were bad last year, but you guys aren't bad enough to get Andrew Luck. I can guarantee Buffalo will still be worse off than you guys. That whole franchise is fucked from the ground up. Poor fans.
I liked the pick the 49ers made with Aldon Smith. I'm relieved they didn't draft a QB, but the bad news is Alex Smith will be back. I hope Harbaugh is right about him and can turn Smith's career around.
i have a feeling we will be bringing in someone other than alex smith. i cant help but wonder if we could have gotten a little value for the pick by bluffing on locker or gabbert though
