Many years ago (around 1977) when ABM & I rented a townhouse in the Willamette are of West Linn, someone donated a house to the city. Supposedly, the city volunteer fire department was going to set it ablaze numerous times and practice putting out the fires. Well, things went wrong the first and it burnt to the ground the first time. They got all tangled up... Good stuff.
Fire trucks came to my neighborhood twice this morning, idling outside my building as I was trying to sleep (the first time, at least). Also an ambulance made an appearance. I can't imagine there were any actual fires that occurred. I guess I should be happy they're so willing to come (since I might need their assistance someday) but in the mean time... sheesh. It's annoying. Ed O.
The economy's on fire, right next door to the guys in charge of making sure the economy doesn't catch fire.
Homes typically burn from the inside out, so if they are vacant usually by the time they are noticed they are already gutted. Fantastic that the FD spotted the fire that none of the neighbors did and were able to put it out before lives and other properties were endangered. I agree with your assertion that government works.
