"The Detroit Lions snatched up defensive tackle Nick Fairley of Auburn with the 13th overall pick of the NFL draft Thursday in New York City.

Fairley, 6 foot 4 and 298 pounds, will join Ndamukong Suh -- the No. 2 pick in last year's draft -- Kyle Vanden Bosch and Corey Williams on the defensive line.

A junior, Fairley won the 2011 Lombardi Award and was not expected to still be available at No. 13, but a run on quarterbacks coupled with questions about Fairley's work ethic contributed to his slide.

A consensus All-American and SEC defensive player of the year, Fairley posted 60 tackles, 11 1/2 sacks last season before deciding to leave a year early. Originally projected as a top-five pick, he had only one productive year at Auburn (he spent two years at community college) and turned off some teams in the interview process. But he is an explosive and disruptive interior presence with above-average technique. He should be a good complement to Suh."
