"The Dolphins might have gotten themselves their running back of the future Friday night, but they paid dearly for the privilege.

Forced to sit and watch through most of the second round of the NFL Draft after dealing away their pick in the Brandon Marshall trade last year, the Dolphins sent their third-, fifth- and seventh-round picks to Washington to move up 17 spots and take Kansas State's Daniel Thomas with the 62nd choice.

Miami came out of the first two days of the draft with just two players, first-rounder Mike Pouncey and Thomas, and has just four picks remaining today, one each in the fourth and sixth rounds and two in the seventh.

Thomas, who hails from the North Florida town of Hilliard, rushed for 1,585 yards and 19 touchdowns as the feature back for the Wildcats last year.

"He's a big, physical runner," Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland said. "He can get to the second level, and then make a linebacker miss and a safety miss. He's kind of a one-cut runner, but very physical."

With Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown both becoming free agents whenever the NFL gets back to business, Thomas might be the new No. 1 back for Miami, though Ireland cautioned either or both still could return.

"I wouldn't look at Ronnie or Ricky's future (in Miami) being over," he said."
