"In choosing North Carolina linebacker Bruce Carter in the second round and all-purpose Oklahoma running back DeMarco Murray in the third round, the Dallas Cowboys added two players on Friday's second day of the NFL Draft who eventually could be starters and replace high-priced veterans. For Carter, his move to the forefront will likely take a little longer. He is rehabbing a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and won't be ready until training camp.Team owner Jerry Jones said the Cowboys expect Carter to be a big contributor in the 2011 season, but he guaranteed roster spots for veteran linebackers Bradie James and Keith Brooking."We will have Bradie and Brooking on the team, absolutely and unequivocally," Jones said.He did not make the same promise for veteran running back Marion Barber in light of Murray's arrival.Coach Jason Garrett said Murray was a complete running back with no holes in his game and can contribute as a runner, receiver and blocker. The Cowboys also plan to use him on kick and punt returns. The numbers say the Cowboys must make a move at running back, considering they will not keep starter Felix Jones, Tashard Choice and Barber on the roster along with Murray.Barber seems to be the logical odd man out since his role was reduced last season to a short-yardage back, with Jones getting more carries as the featured back. The Cowboys also could save Barber's $500,000 roster bonus, as well as his $4.25 million salary. It is similar to what the Cowboys ultimately will do with right offensive tackle Marc Colombo after taking Tyron Smith with the ninth overall pick Thursday."
