It's not their move, it's my move. Everyone says it's their move. I think it's (mine)

I agree 100%. If Oden wants a new start, he holds all of the cards.

Getting his happiness back may well be more important to him than some extra money from the Blazers holding his Bird rights.

Nailed it. Has Canzano been reading my posts on this board for the past season? :dunno:

    Money talks, and bullshit walks.

Greg can't be arrogant enough to think he's earned a big contract extension or having his rookie contract extended. He's had 1 good season (over 1 1/4 seasons), and missed two whole complete seasons. He hasn't earned a guaranteed contract yet.

I hope they keep him and I hope he is excited to play here. While he does hold the cards, so to speak, he has to see it from the Blazers point of view. I don't think he's saying (as many here seem to openly speculate) "I'm out of here", as much as he's saying "I have some say in this too."

While I disagree with Canzano's assertion that the Blazers somehow dissed Oden, I fully agree with Greg saying that he holds all of the cards; if he wants a fresh start who could blame him? Whatever happens it would be pretty hard for me to question his decision.

He absolutely owes us, IMO. All the resources the organization has put in to his constant rehabilitation by itself makes him owe us. So much time, money, coaching and effort has been put in to Greg. He owes the Blazers. He owes us. No doubt about it.

It all comes down to if Oden wants to gamble that he will be injury free this next season.

His agents will tell him to sign with the 4yrs/$40mill with Portland this year. It's the safest and smartest move to make for him. He's still young, he can leave or even demand a trade in a couple of years if he is really that unhappy here but with his injury history the best move is to take as much money as possible without having to prove he's worth it.

    That means staying in Portland.

The thing is, IF he signs with Portland he'll probably get more money and a longer guaranteed contract (at least, if I was the GM of another team I wouldn't give him anything longer than 3 years).

AND if he has a healthy season, he could then get traded if he so wanted.

The notion that he owes anyone anything is silly to me. He's not a child, we made him the number 1 pick. We gave him the contract. If it's perfectly legal for him to go and play somewhere else, then there's no reason he can't make that decision. Dragging emotions into this is just unnecessary.

Plus, it's not like he wouldn't have gotten the same amount of resources from another team.

The resources the team put into the rehabs were to try to realize a dividend from the contract they gave him, not a gift they gave Oden out of the goodness of their hearts. The team tried to give him the best chance to succeed and Oden tried his best to succeed. That's what each side "owed" the other and both made good, as far as I'm concerned. I want him to stay, but I'm not going to view him as lacking ethics if he decides to go elsewhere when he's an unrestricted free agent.

Either we retain Greg at a price we're comfortable with or we'll sign and trade him, netting a decent return for a questionable investment.

Either way we'll come out of his restricted Free Agency with some modicum of control.

Question is, "If he takes another offer from a different team...do we boo him?" Personally I would, because he's been such a disappointment and to quit on the franchise when we invested so much into him. How would you guys react in his first game back to the Garden if he's in another uniform?

Why would a team that could sign him as a UFA want to give the Blazers something in return if they don't have to do it?

I think that this is more than an either/or option.

I won't react. If he decides it's in his best interest to move on, then I'll trust that he knows what's best for him. Being a drafted player shouldn't be indentured servitude. The only way I would feel compelled to boo him is if he held an elaborate dog and pony show on ESPN to announce that he's taking his talents to Lake Michigan.

Portland will offer him the QO. If we don't sign him to a long term deal by trade deadline 2012, he will be traded. We WONT lose him for nothing.

A team that doesn't have cap space to sign him as an UFA could be interested in a sign-and-trade.

He won't be an UFA. We'll tender him and allow him to shop for offers.

Once he inevitably receives one, we'll decide whether he's more valuable to retain (I'm guessing 80% likely) or if we'll let him go.

On your either/or option, you could be right if a team w/ cap space wants to use their space on Greg. That said, given the likely FA market and scarce # of teams under the cap, there's a VERY good chance that Greg's offer will either be from a team over the cap (AKA they'd NEED to do a S&T) OR it'll be a MLE offer, which I think we'd gladly match.

Beyond that, we'll have the ability to communicate with GO to gauge what his desires are. If he wants to stay it's a no-brainer. If he wants to leave, then we negotiate a S&T.

Pretty simple roster management. The only way we lose him for nothing is if a team w/ a lot of caproom offers him a huge deal that we won't match. Even then (see: Miami signing LBJ last offseason) I think we S&T him. Even if it's just for draft picks & a big trade exception, we'll get something for him.

I feel Oden is gone... In the playoff games he showed no emotion for his team and many observed him not even paying attention. Not a great sign of a guy who wants to be here, or wants a team built around him. Don't be shocked if he takes any offer out of here! Greg doesn't show any heart and as for people who have been around this guy in Ptown, he also shows very little class!

With the Blazers luck he'll be picked up by Boston and he'll win three championships for them! HAHA!

Send him to the Lakers. If his heart is not in Portland, then tell him to take a hike. Us fans have supported him throughout all his injuries, and if he wants to piss on us, then piss on him. Let the Lakers worry about his fragile ego and pride.

If he leaves for less or equal money, he'd be Judas, plainly and simply. I'd hold a sign up with a pinwheel next to it at any basketball game I saw him at.
