He's already injury prone, so what you're saying is that you endorse the death penalty for Bynum. Interesting.
I agree completely with Shapecity. It was uncalled for and embarassing. But alot of people are really blowing this up like its never happened before. Some HOF have done similar to this.... and notice how all those guys actually STOPPED THEIR GUY FROM SCORING haha, vagynum wasnt even playing the ball
20 games is fucking ridiculous. The foul was fucking dirty and uncalled for and he does have a prior history of it. However, Raja Bell got only 1 game for clotheslining Kobe and KG got 0 games for punching some dude in the nuts. 5-7 games + a hefty fine is justifiable. Don't let your hatred blur your vision.
Sure. But this is his third offense. He has previously injured two players, on purpose, in the exact same manner, and was trying for the trifecta. I think 20 games is inconceivable. Five games should be the minimum, up to 10 seems plausible, all things considered. And well deserved.
I don't have a problem with the foul IF the game is close and Barea is getting into the paint at will. Basketball is an emotional game and he lost it. He needs to learn to not throw that elbow out. It takes it from being a hard foul to being a fucking dirty foul. I've got no problems with putting people on their asses if they come into the paint at will...that isn't the way to do it, though. Or maybe he just watches too much Bad Boys basketball.
10 games, not including lock out games and a 250k donation to a battery shelter seems like enough, with a stipulation that the next one will be a year of vacation. he has a pattern of behavior, if punishment won't stop that, the nba really has a responsibility to its employees to keep them safe at this point from uncontrollable players.
I think what will make it worse for Bynum is his complete lack of remorse and his bullshit "We were losing, I wanted out of there, so I fouled a guy" line. My guess is 5 games and $100K.
The Lakers got swept, and to add insult to injury, they went out showing poor sportsmanship…Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum were both ejected for flagrant fouls, but Andrew Bynum had the cheap shot of the year on Mavericks shooting guard J.J. Barea…My source from the NBA front offices tell me Bynum will be fined in excess of $100,000 and will be suspended for the first 20 games of next season…Bynum could have really hurt Barea, but it’s not the end of the world…If you ever played street ball, you would know cheap shots happen all the time. Does the punishment fit the crime…I think so. -TO http://www.terezowens.com/nba-to-levy-major-fine-and-suspension-on-bynum/#respond
Well according to his contract, he makes roughly 15 mil per season. The $100,000 is chump change to the amount of money he loses in salary. I did the math and he will lose about 3.65 mil. Pending the lock out, He may even lose more. That would be a great punishment. Sets the tone for the rest of the league.
I know I should be more outraged over what Bynum did.....but the Mavs flop so much, it is tough to care. I *hate* floppers!
I was giddy on Artest's cloths line, because it wasn't like he was in mid air, and his chances of permanent injury was slim. What Bynum did was try to intentionally injure the guard. Mid air, elbow right to the ribs, then pulls his shirt off like he was justified for doing it. That is why it's disgusting. So I seriously hate floppers too. In fact, I wished one of the Blazers would have given JJ a hard foul. But I would never wish for a player to do something that could possibly cause permanent damage.
I guess Bynum also took exception to Barera elbowing Steve Blake in the face with a 30 point lead prior to driving to the basket and getting leveled by Bynum.
My perception of this incident is based on a few factors. 1. Even if this WAS in retaliation to something Barea did earlier, Barea is SMALLER than Blake. If Blake wants to settle things with Barea then that's his prerogative, not somebody who's 16 inches taller and probably 150 lbs heavier to do so. 2. Blake was not in mid-air when he got hit, Barea was. Elbows have no place in basketball, but they happen, as do hard fouls. Mid-air body checks have no place in ANY sport and I tend to agree with the people that are clamoring for assault charges. There was a deliberate attempt to hurt a much smaller player on Bynum's behalf. 3. The score. Not that Barea's elbow against Blake is all that much more excusable, being up 30 he should know better than that, but the Lakers were going home, Barea wasn't. On Barea's behalf, one could argue that he was playing hard and trying to maintain a physical mentality, since he'll need that in the next series. Again, by comparison, this only makes Bynum's act that much more reprehensible. The game, series, and their season was over. What's to argue on his behalf? It appears to me that he was simply trying to hurt Barea, and the NBA can't let that slide. 4. Finally, I think the league HAS to take his prior record into consideration. There are big-man hard fouls, and there are blatant cheap shots. This one, as were his others, was clearly the latter. I don't necessarily think 20 games is the PERFECT punishment - I'd be more amenable to something like 15 - but I don't think it's absurd either. The league has tried multiple times to send Bynum a message and it clearly hasn't worked yet.
I was discussing this with my roommate, we watch the play again, and looked for stories about it. I too was claiming that was a dirty play until I looked into it more After that game Bynum apologized to Crash thru the media for hurting him, said he was late on the rotation and was trying to get back in time to not get grilled by the coaches. Said it was 100% unintentional. Also, he waited at the Bobcats bus for Larry Brown and gave a heartfelt apology to him. Larry even said afterwards it was an accident
100% unintentional. Right. It's funny how in all three of those incidents, Wallace, Beasley and Barea, Bynum throws out his elbow and turns his head. Just watched the video. He was definitey late. Initially looked like he might just go hard foul, but then tossed out the elbow and turned his head. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, three times....you can't fool me again. Same action each time.
You're right! If you watch the video backwards you can clearly see that Wallace intentionally fouls Bynum's elbow with his chest.
